Who's Playing the Capitol Hill Block Party?

Posted by on Tue, May 11, 2010 at 10:15 AM

These guys?

The official line-up announcement for this year's Capitol Hill Block Party* won't be made here until June 1st, but sharp-eyed readers of summer tour itineraries will have noticed some glaring gaps approaching Seattle on the Block Party weekend of July 23rd/24th, chiefly:

Dead Weather (nothing between SF, 7/22 and Portland, 7/24)

MGMT (nothing between Oakland, 7/21 and Vancouver BC, 7/24)

So, kind of looks like both those acts could be playing Friday, July 23rd. But what about Saturday?

(And of course, there are a lot of bands with long gaps following the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, 7/16-18—Broken Social Scene, Titus Andronicus, Free Energy, Major Lazer, Beach House, Girls, Sleigh Bells, Surfer Blood, and others—but that's nowhere near as definitive as a two day gap right in the neighborhood of the NW.)

So, who do you think is going to play the Capitol Hill Block Party? Let this be your open comments thread to go crazy with speculation. (Confidential to Jeff: I think this is gonna be the year the Halo Benders really, really, really do it—for reals!)

*We know, it's a crime to charge money for an outdoor concert or something.

Untold and Ikonika are playing Decibel this year, so all other Seattle music festivals are kind of not on my radar.

Bands = what is the point?

CHAMPAGNE CHAMPAGNE! Those guys know how to work a crowd.

CHBP will pull a few big names for sure- as for potential Block Party acts, I'm going to say that with the nudedragons/Soundgarden show fresh in everyone's memory, the live performance at CHBP couldn't be too far off.

Only confirmation I've heard is that Motrecraft will not be playing.

We can assume from Meinert's earlier statement that there will be a lot of (local) hip hop.

Which probably means: Champagne Champagne, THEE Satisfaction, MAD Rad/Fresh Espresso and Mash Hall.

Hopefully Truckasaurus makes it in there somewhere.

Give me a reason to come to this. Please.

The Dead Weather were amazing at Coachella - would be incredible to get them for the Block Party!

The Obits/Night Marchers tour has a gap between their Portland and Vancouver shows that safely falls on July 24th.

@12 now THAT would be rad

But seriously, I'm willing to bet there will be at least one or two bigger national hip-hop names. Someone on Rhymesayers maybe given the Seattle connection they have seemed to develop?

They need either J. Cole or Jay Electronica. Seriously. Enough smelly DIY bands.

Who programs the music festival known as the Capitol Hill Block Party? Guess I always kind of assumed that the Stranger was part of the process.

@20, exactly. so if grandy is asking for the readers to speculate to who "might" be playing when he can just tell us...that is a major bush league move. geebuz.

i wanna see obits play again. good stuff.

@21 Mika Miko killed it last year. The vagina smell was part of their appeal.

apparently the stranger doesn't book the bands. Dave Meinert/Fuzed Music "produces" the event; so I guess this might mean that he's responsible for booking it?

J. Burns 25
Fuzed probably books the Main Stage. I know Vera and Neumo's book their own stages.
