Capitol Hill Block Party to Add Third Day?

Posted by on Thu, May 13, 2010 at 2:41 PM

Block Party organizers Dave Meinert and Jason Lajeunesse have been making the rounds to Capitol Hill businesses the last couple days gathering signatures with which to petition the city to allow Capitol Hill Block Party to run a third day, on Sunday July, 25th. Meinert says the Sunday date would largely be to accommodate the schedule requests of one rumored to-be-playing band, and that Blue Scholars would also likely play the Sunday date if the city's overseer of special events permitting, Virginia Swanson, approves their request.

Update: Meinert adds:

We need to get as many residents on Capitol Hill to write in support of the 3rd day as possible. People can email us at press@capitolhillblockparty.com or fax to 206-374-2700. And important to also email the city at Virginia Swanson (Virginia.Swanson@Seattle.Gov).

Also keep in mind that a 3rd day will make a lot of local employees a lot of money and raise money for KEXP and The Vera Project, the two charities the event benefits.

And, as noted here: we know, it's a crime to charge money for an outdoor concert.

I love the CHBP, but wonder if the city / the world really needs another three day music festival. </oldperson>

I would be all for a third day if this were, in fact, an actual neighborhood block party, and not a vomitization of suburbanites on our fair locale. Make the third day FREE for capitol hill residents and I'll write a letter to Merry X-Miss.

Greedhead Dave Meinert wants to turn what was once a block party into the Bumbershoot of Capitol Hill. The first block party was free. Now it's an out-of-scale monstrosity with arena acts, transnationational beer sponsors, and ripoff ticket prices.

Don't be fooled by the appeals to raise money for KEXP and The Vera Project. The Capitol Hill Ripoff and Shakedown is a for-profit organization. These appeals remind me of the actions of the Seattle Marathon. The Seattle Times investigated the Seattle Marathon and found that token amounts went to the designated non-profits.

Last year security backstage was rude to me. I'm not signing anything!

I'm not very invested as to whether it's a 2 or 3-day festival, but describing KEXP as a "charity" seems a little disingenuous.

Wow you're a HUGE nerd. I was a resident of Capitol Hill in the late90's/early 00's (yes that makes me old), before all the scenesters invaded, but now I live in the dreaded suburbs. And although I lived there for 7 great years, my "hill" pass should now be revoked (according to you)?

The CHBP is absolutely full of douche bags and for one whole weekend the festival destroys the vibe of Capitol Hill. However, I understand there are not many options for the underage so I don’t blame them for wanting to attend something simply because they are allowed to.

@7 Yes.

Free passes for those in the immediate area would go long a way in gathering 'community support'

Good bands or not, it does make getting around kind of a pain.

I'd fully support the idea of a free day, hearkening back to when Bumbershoot was free on the Friday it kicked off. Great way to make it more of a community event and less profit-oriented, as well as bring in people who might not otherwise go or that can't afford tickets.

Yeah, and then you can't have the bands that y'all want if it's Free on some day. Nobody ever thinks about that do they? I always have a great time at CHBP which is why I go. If you don't like it, stay the fuck away. Simple really.
