No, seriously. I found a videotape hanging in a tree:
Seeing as how it was hanging in a tree across from Seattle Central Community College, I assumed it was someone's art project—it was painted maroon and it had a Post-It note stuck to the front that said "watch me." I thought I would maybe get yelled at for taking it down ("Don't touch the art!"), but I untied it from the twine anyway, while quietly hoping I wasn't about to put a stranger's attempt at homemade donkey porn into my purse.
Turns out the videotape also has a web address written on it—www.gladiatorseatfire.com—, which directs me to the website for the local hardcore/rock band Gladiators Eat Fire. A-ha! It is a band thing. Thank Christ it's probably not donkey porn. Gladiators Eat Fire have a new record coming out July 10th, so it looks like they're doing something a little different in the way of getting the word out—they're hanging videotapes in trees.
But if you weren't already familiar with Gladiators Eat Fire, and the fact that they have a new record coming out, the website offers very few clues. For the most part, it's just cryptic flashing images that link to dead end pages with different symbols and letters on them. There's one page that has what I assume is the upcoming record's track list—"Loud Is the New Freedom," "This Shit Is Christmas," "Fireflies" (an Owl City cover maybe? I kid, I kid...). There's another page that has this video (which I assume is the video on the tape hanging in the tree):
Creeeeeepy.
There were other videotapes tied to other trees. Did you take one? Did you watch it? Did you solve the band's promotional puzzle?*
*Assuming there is a puzzle to solve, of course. It's also very likely this is all just a way to get people to talk about their band and their upcoming record, and the symbols and letters and creepy video mean nothing at all. In which case, good job, dudes: You did it!
