When Squares Throw Down

Posted by on Fri, Jul 16, 2010 at 12:40 PM

Here we have Paul Anka. He is one MAJOR SQUARE.

Anka is a pop vocal Supper Club/Vegas "entertainer" all the way. He even collaborated on Sinatra's "My Way"...so yeah, Vegas all the way, baby. Turns out he was, in fact, a prolific pop songwriter AND composer....and also a very silly man, who can forget THIS!?! But in the '50s this Canook was lumped in with the teen "parent approved" faces of the late '50s that curtailed the push of untamed youth and black groups/artists making "rebellious" RocknRoll that started to crack into the top 40 and shake the very foundations OF POLITE SOCIETY!!! Yep. He was one of those kinda Pat Boone mofos....all fluff no tuff...you have heard his song "Puppy Love" I presume?

Turns out in 1966 he cut one BLISTERING side..."Can't Help But Loving You" is a MAJOR blue eyed soul throw down, even tho' there is a bit of schlockiness, this still winds up and is catchy as hell!!!!

He had another side that gets played as a dancer, "When We Get There"....but it's not quite as exciting. To me sounds a bit like a '60s soundtrack theme song. Meh.
