Shore Thing

Posted by on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 5:53 PM

Watching potato-headed MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews praise the merits of summertime at the Jersey shore moments ago, I was reminded of yesterday’s Block Party act Real Estate, and the sentimental lyrics of their “Suburban Dogs”:

“Carry me back to sweet Jersey, back where I long to be / By the fumes of the yellow and green, next to my darling lady”

Matthews’ comments were in response to this clip of Jersey governor Chris Christie, who talked smack on MTV’s Jersey Shore, and referred to the shore itself as an ideal summer vacation spot.

Would someone who’s actually been there fill me in? Is the Jersey shore a hypnagogic paradise or crass, spray-tanned wasteland?*

*Because it can be only one of those two things. Just kiddin.’

Hah, there's parts of it that are exactly like it's portrayed in the show (not that I've, uh, seen it or nothing) and other parts that are serene and beautiful. It just depends on where you go.

I lurved that Real Estate set though, perfect tunes to listen to on a warm day.

New Jersey has a long shoreline. Unfortunately for the shoreline, it's connected to New Jersey.

Well, Pennsylvania is New Jersey's inferior cousin, so whatever. I will omit the insights about UW-bred boys from small town Washington, for now.
