A million years ago (about nine of them to be exact) my man Sonny Bonoho used to throw a hiphop showcase called Glitta at the Kirkland Teen Center. At the very first one many performes gave their all (including a very green Cancer Rising), but all fell to the might of a very young, very polished young man in cornrows named Hot Rod. Some people grumbled that this Bow Wow wannabe walked off with whatever the prize was but to me it was clear, he won the shit fair and square.
Hot Rod is now a 20-year old MC named Roderic, representing Tacoma. Last year, he popped up on 106th & Park, competing for shine against other hungry young artists; this year he has a new song and video that I could very easily see in their rotation. Which isn't to mean it's godawful like most of the stuff they fuck with; it's a dope song, and the accompanying video (lensed by Jon Augustavo) showcases Rod's subtle swag (and features a cameo from Isiah Thomas). This is the part where Tacoma stands up.
