The Infamous* Mad Rad Diss

Posted by on Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 6:36 PM

This is what I imagine many Line Out commenters sound like. The tweaker in your basement that probably used to tell people he was a jungle MC a decade ago, that now pretends to be a freedom fighter for Real Hip Hop, in between American Spirits. (This just in from the Real Hip Hop Delegation: "We don't want him either".)

When the DJ Premier beat dropped, I LOLD IRL. OK OK OK i know, diss the guy who disses your homeboys but really? No. This is a terrible excuse for a rap song much less the holy art of the diss track. Sorry dude, diss teh Rad if you must, and as many motherfuckers talk about em you think somebody really would—but for crissakes, give em something to work with. This guy is in the same league as this guy. Goddammit, they deserve better.

"Listen to No Vaseline before you flex again."

This dude sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher. Not one of his punchlines popped out at me. He actually makes Disco Rick sound like a decent rapper.

@4 that's some funny shit. Spin? You mean the magazine that was flown to Seattle by Meinert & co to do a photo spread of the block party? With the VIP tent overseen by Mad Rad's manager, would you expect them to show up anywhere lower than the top ten?

I can't tell if this is a joke or not. Has anyone rapped this poorly on a Primo beat before?

I hope you all realize this is clearly an ironic play on how terrible Mad Rad actually is. And for that, it's brilliant. But the fact that many of you don't pick up on it is where the true joke is.

This is a horrible as rap, joke or not. I'm stoked for Mad Rad's new album. They played a bunch of it at block party. Seems like a good step up from the last album based on what I heard. Also, did anyone else notice they dropped "crack the blunt" right at 4:20. Made me happy ;)

I've met this kid and he tried to start a fight with me within the first 5 minutes of meeting. And yes, he is really "like this." He kept telling me I "don't know where he's from," or "who he knows." This kid is a joke.

(And for the record, I'm also a for-life Mad Rad hater. I would love nothing more than to see someone take them down in a song, but this isn't it.)

Unfortunately, there is no winner in this battle, aside from people with terrible and even more terrible musical taste.

@7: We're laughing at you, not with you. There's a difference. If you were shooting for meta-, the fact that it went over everyone's head doesn't mean that you're that good at it, it just means you blow. Try to uh, connect with your audience next time.

I have no dog in this fight, BTW. I am ambivalent towards Mad Rad. They do their thing, people dig it, they're not displacing records I like from my shelf.

I am, however, a huge fan of diss tracks. This one doesn't even have a single diss in it until he mumbles at the end about coke in girls' bathrooms. It makes Soulja Boy's "Fuck Bow Wow," look like "Fuck Compton."

As far as party raps go Mad Rad are fine at what they do.

Some people like 'em, some don't. Can't say I have much of an opinion either way. They've always struck me as more of a novelty act. Fresh Espresso are pretty decent, but there's just so much other good music in Seattle right now that wasting time on what you don't like seems so trivial.

I listen to music I enjoy and ignore that which I don't.

I'd argue that's the road we all should take.

j.burns-
are you citing "fuck compton" as an example of an effective diss song?

just checking.

@27 Effective? Enough for Dre and Snoop to retaliate and dedicate a verse of "Dre Day" and a skit towards Tim Dog. There were technically much better rappers from that era, but it's a bit like saying that Joe Satriani and Steve Vai are better guitarists than Greg Ginn or Jad Fair.

Entertaining? Absolutely.

A great deal more than this herb, at least.

The only bit of knowledge to be gleamed from this thread: Spin is still being published. I really thought that magazine died in the '90s, but apparently that's just when it's cultural relevance died.
