Lollapalooza: Matt & Kim, Hot Chip, Lady Gaga, the Strokes

Lollapalooza, Perry Farrell's onetime traveling roadshow of eclectic musical programming has returned to its new permanent home in Chicago's Grant Park for another year. I showed up yesterday afternoon in time to remind myself just how gigantic and imposing the park is. After an hour wandering in the wilderness in search of the media entrance, we made it inside in time to see the superfantastic happiness explosions from Matt & Kim and a slick maraca-shaking dance party from London's Hot Chip. The headliners, a million miles apart stylistically were stationed a ten-minute jog apart at opposite ends of the grounds. On the north end, the Strokes played their first stateside show in several years, sounding fantastically like 2k1. On the south side, Lady Gaga brought two hours of slickly produced, if not heartfelt, maximalist production to a sea of adoring monsters.

If I remember correctly I stayed at the Congress Hotel several years ago. I was in a really bad part of the hotel at that. Everything in the room/hallway needed to be burned down. Door looked like it had been opened without the key, hallway smelled of shit, tiles in bathroom were cracking off.
