WTF? Squarepusher's on Ed Banger Now?!

Posted by on Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 11:10 AM

Recently found out from the Daily Swarm that British producer Squarepusher (aka Tom Jenkinson) will be releasing a single on the French label Ed Banger (Justice, DJ Mehdi, Uffie, et al.) titled "Cryptic Motion"; it includes a remix by Mr. Oizo.

"Cryptic Motion" finds Squarepusher in fairly lighthearted, clubby, downtempo-funk mode. It has some nice dramatic flourishes and crispy textures, but the track's a far cry from the PhD-level beat science and tonal headfuckery that mark his greatest productions (see practically everything up to Go Plastic). Mr. Oizo's remix mainly does what you want Mr. Oizo remixes to do—ratchet up the quirkiness and funkiness and throw in as many extreme effects as possible.

This is a respectable release, but I'm still in shock over the idea of a Squarepusher record without the Warp logo. Good thing I have a vacation coming up, in order to recover from the trauma this unlikely turn of events has caused.

Since 'Red Hot Car' gets disqualified on lyrical content, I have to say this must be the poppiest thing from Pusher yet. Looking forward to the album (which is said to continue in this vein)!
