Ratatat's video for "Drugs" (off their new album, LP4; not a Talking Heads cover), is one of the queasiest-looking things I've seen in a while. It's a perverse feat, because the clip largely consists of seemingly "normal" folks looking right into the camera with unnervingly intense smiles. As the video (directed by Carl Burgess) progresses, expressions vary and "drama" arises, but with everything set against a gray-blue screen, the tableaux take on a disturbing tenor, even in—especially because of—their mundanity. The song's alternately perky and suspenseful moods complement the Lynch lite style of the video very well.
Ratatat perform at Showbox Sodo Tues. Sept. 14.
