Ska Bands With the Word "Ska" in Their Name

Not a new idea, but one certainly worth revisiting, because it's Monday, and who really wants to be working anyway? Many of these names were from this list, but a few more are from a quick query of our database. Vote on your favorite, and as always, write-ins are welcome in the comments.

Bonus points if you can pick the one I made up.

Vote for your favorite!

@2: I've often wondered/hoped the same thing. My vote has to go to Mephiskapheles, but there are a ton of good ones in this list (and by "good," I mean horrible).

The ska band on my college campus (ND ca. 1997) were "The Skalcoholics".

The sister of a friend of mine from college is in Ska King Crab, and they do a classic ska cover of Inspector Gadget.

And I've always wanted to start a ska-death-metal band called Ska'd For Life.

@24 the skoidats are in a league of their own after creating an awful hybrid of oi! and ska.

Skatalites are the only band on this list that can get away with.

Lloyd Brevett, Roland Alphonso, Lloyd Knibb, et all were legends in island music.

@27: Look more closely at the poll. Your sister's friend's band is in there, and it looks like someone beat you to Ska'd for Life.

Ska will forever remind me of my days in a high school marching band. I guess we were thrilled to encounter people playing our dorky instruments outside of classical music, marches and jazz? Sandcrabs for life ;__;

(yes our mascot really was the sandcrab)

@2: I am amazed this band does not exist.

@26: You sir, are correct. Easily one of the best bands of all of American ska. I am going to go put their record on now.

@28: The skoidats had some amazing shit! How can you honestly dismiss them? Some of their work was admittedly cheesy (really? you drink? at a pub? with friends!?), but some of it was the most evil, violent and incredibly tight ska-punk ever made.

I was just happy Shrimp Skampi and the Skallops were on this list. Best use of ska in a name ever. I remember reading an old moon ska "skazzette" (oh fuck yeah!) that mentioned they were the coming of the apocalypse. I agreed and then found a demo as quickly as I could, and they were terrible. I mean, not even just because of the name, et al.

Finally, I'd like to start a politics / current event themed outfit called "Skantorum" and make Savage come to every show.

hey juris! you are cracking me up right now. on a whim I just did a google search of the name "shrimp skampi & the skallops"... why? because back in 1997 when I was a sprightly 14 year old, this was the name of the band I played in. I was kinda curious what kind of internet presence there would be for the band now, 13 years later... and here you are! talking shit about our name just like it was the 90s all over again! It's fantastic!

what is lovely is that, while your hatred of the name is certainly valid (it started off as a joke for us, and we eventually changed it once we grew tired of hearing it ) your memory is clearly not too sharp... for the following reasons:

1. moon records did not regard us as the coming of the apocalypse... in fact they featured one of our songs on a compilation record (after our band name switched to The Blue Roots) and also booked us for a Moon Ska Showcase at the Wetlands (a now-defunct club in NYC).

2. i would really like to hear this "demo" which you found "as quickly as you could" ... because, while we recorded a number of songs, we never released any demos or sold any of our recordings. I've got a ZIP file on my hard drive right now of all the music we recorded over the course of the four years of our existence, and I'd be happy to send it to you if you actually want to hear what we sounded like. It didn't exactly usher in a new era of musical consciousness, but for a bunch of songs recorded by precocious teenagers it's actually pretty good. we were a 9 piece all-instrumental ska band that played from the time we were 14 years old to 18 ... during which time we sold out a number of shows in our hometown philadelphia, opened for groups like the Skatalites, the Slackers, the Toasters, the Stubborn All-Stars, had a ton of fun writing and performing music every week, and got varying degrees of young ska chick action. What were YOU doing when you were 16?

I see you also posted about the awfulness of the name one other place on this site... so I gotta say, thanks for remembering us! glad that after all these years, the joke me and my friends had in the basement of our keyboardist's parents' house can still inspire your response for "worst band name ever".

Thanks for playing!
