Spokane High School Teacher Suspended for Handing Out Blue Scholars Lyrics

Posted by on Wed, Sep 8, 2010 at 3:27 PM

From the Associated Press:

A Shadle Park High School teacher has been placed on leave for allegedly handing out the lyrics to a song by the hip hop group Blue Scholars on the first day of school.

Spokane school spokeswoman Terren Roloff...did not have details about the song. But the members of the Seattle duo Blue Scholars say the song was called "Commencement Day."

Among the song's lyrics:

Brother sister please don’t believe the bullshit they said.
Fuck the pledge of allegiance and arrogant teachers

School authorities say the matter is being investigated.

More lyrics:

"It goes one for the student who refuses to submit
And two for the teachers who are underpaid as shit
It’s the next generation of miseducated youth
Who demonstrate the truth and manage to make it through"

Yeah, totally sucks to have students who think, rebel, or otherwise challenge authority. Not qualities that are desirable in good little sheep. Jaysus.

This is bullshit! If the problem is the swear words, a suspension is still overboard. If it was the lyrical content, some serious first amendment rights might be getting violated. Blue Scholars should play a benifit for this teacher. And this can't be bad for Seattle hip-hop either!

HA! My high school! It was a long time ago but never like this... We seemed to have a lot of freedom- as long as you weren't disrespectfully defiant. I think I did about 90 minutes of class a day my last two years and got credit for the other 5+hours by showing I was learning in 'the real world'. It was non-structured free time and you presented what you learned based on your own idea of learning (not unlike Evergreen here). Interesting..........

If you think the teacher's first amendment rights were trampled on you need to review "Tucker versus Des Moines Supreme Court case" from the 1970's. In this case the Supreme Court ruled for the young people's right to wear black arm bands protesting the Vietnam War. Although they ruled for the teenagers, the court acknowledged that the administration had the right to ban/stop any activity that would cause a major disturbance or effect the ability of other students to learn. The judges said that the admistration kept that right, however in this case the school was not able to proove that the protest had caused a disturbance.

If the teacher handing out lyrics like these to students on the first day of school caused a disturbance, then the principal/superintendent were well within their rights.
