Viva La Mekons Forever

Gobs of music enthusiasts remain baffled that the Mekons aren't better known, but I have an idea why. Sometimes the best things aren't for everybody to understand.

Mekons: A curse so good, it hurts.
  • Mekons: A curse so good, it hurts.

Starting in Leeds in 1977, they've consistently made some of the best music of many genres. For me, "Where Were You" is the ultimate track for flailing alone in your bedroom, mad at some person about a matter of the heart. From those early punker beginnings to straight-ahead late 80s rock, a wonderful British take on Americana & the current "post-folk" era, they've maintained an infected cult following to this day. It seems that a documentary, Revenge Of The Mekons, is in the works as I type, and you have the opportunity to help make it. I went on tour with them in 2008 & took some photos. Seeing them on a somewhat regular basis is one of the things I miss about Chicago, for sure.

Where Were You is the first thing I'm gonna listen to when I get home. Loud. Thanks, Derek.
