Oh, (Zola) Jesus—It's Grave Wave

Posted by on Wed, Nov 24, 2010 at 4:37 PM

New scene/trend alert: grave wave. It encompasses "witch house, post punk, neofolk, EBM, death rock, goth, electro, 80s revivalists, Batcave purists, et al.," writes Mishka. He/she surmises that grave wave has arisen due to grim economic times and a resurgence in nostalgia for acts like Sisters of Mercy, Peter Murphy, Ministry, and the Wax Trax! label (he/she forgot Specimen).

You can peruse Mishka's survey of grave-wave artists here. (I feel a gusher of Haterade coming from readerland...)

And is this what we're calling Balam Acab now? Dude can't get a genre label to stick to him. He's teflon.

goths of yesteryear are rolling in their graves.

this micro-genre metamorphosis has to stop.

I'm happy to see some friends on here from Houston. Houston has always had a pretty solid EBM/industrial scene. Balaclavas and all those dudes on Skrot Up/FLA tapes have always been more experimental than anything. Why can't we just leave shit alone, internet?!

LOL. No need to hate. NME tried to patch a genre together in the 90s with Placebo and The Verve (first incarnation) called 'nu-grave' that was just as laughable. Some of these acts are ok, some blow - it just seems that someone has looked through to find anything young and dark (but white) and leftfield that could be marketed.

*walks away shrugging*

1.Peter Christopherson and John Balance's estate better be getting royalties.
2.I dont care what the fuck they call it. At this point I am pretty happy with anything that gets Chris & Cosey, Coil and Cabaret Voltaire more exposure. Most of the stuff coming out I totally dig, and even the so-so stuff gives me a nice nostalgia trip.
3. IDM was a stupid fucking name, yet we all still rocked Autechre, AFX and anything else we could track down. Its just nice now not to have to go to the most obscure record stores on the planet to find stuff. and still come away disappointed. I just dial up the old internets and head over to Boomkat.

sucks that a boring streetwear company like MISHKA is counted as a credible source for trending underground music

that was an overgeneralized, kneejerk first reaction. i guess i'll rephrase: the genre isn't new as much as zola jesus's notoriety is relatively new-ish.
