Toward a Half-Assed Best-Of Ween Mixtape

Posted by on Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 4:47 PM

I've been immersing myself in much of Ween's back catalog recently, as I thought I might write a feature on them. However, those plans fell through, so I figured I better at least get a motherfucking blog post out of all that listening. Ergo, here is my idea of what a best-of Ween collection/mixtape would look like. The songs are listed in chronological order; you can sequence them however you want. I'm not going to do all the work for you.

I should add that I am by no means a Ween expert and/or hardcore fan; I probably overlooked some rare 7"s, I've not heard any of those pre-1990 releases, and I've not given a close listen to La Cucaracha since it came out in 2007. Sorry about that. I am simply someone who's had a casual relationship with this New Hope, Pennsylvania group who have somewhat surprisingly earned serious cult success for their sometimes juvenile, scatological genre pastiches/sometimes sublime psychedelic jamming and composing. They are playing the Paramount Theatre Tues. Jan. 25. Respect—even if it's grudging—is due.

After the cut you will find my ultimate Ween mix. (My three favorite Ween songs are "Springtheme," "A Tear for Eddie," and "Marble Tulip Juicy Tree.") Feel free to add your own picks in comments.

Why doesn't the Stranger give Jason Josephes a column? He's consistently one of the funniest writers in the entire city.

This list is good. @1's list is good too.

Neither are complete without the following two songs:
1) Dr Rock
2) Booze me up
