A New Ke$ha Video Pukes on My Brain

Posted by on Fri, Feb 25, 2011 at 11:29 AM

In this new video for Ke$ha's song "Blow," you will find human-bodied unicorns (humicorns?), James Van Der Beek, and a gunfight. Much rainbow-and-glitter carnage ensues. Plus at least one kind of funny joke! It's really worth a watch, even if you hate Ke$ha.

This video, more than all her others, duplicates on a small scale the experience of attending a Ke$ha concert. (You can read about my experience at a recent Ke$ha show here.) It combines a bunch of ironic elements (Van Der Beek has been trying to Chuck Norris himself on the internets for a few months now, and unicorns are always good for a "viral" spin) and air-quoted references in a sloppy, trash-culture style, and then throws the whole thing over the top almost immediately.

Is this cool? Is it too desperate to be cool? Is it right on the line? I don't know. I don't even know. But I know that teenage girls will fucking love it. And I know that I want to watch it again. That makes it a successful video, right? Right?

um, this song, this video, and, as far as I can tell, everything that both Ke$ha and Mr. Van Der Beek have ever done....blow.

aw c'mon. killing unicorns with rainbows? doesn't draw just a tiny smile? and van der Dead pullin off his bra?
at least Ke$ha knows not to take herself (and her not-very-good music) too seriously. kinda like showing up at an awards ceremony in a garbage bag. i liked that too.

Okay, the last minute was kind of cool, I guess. The first 3 were pretty boring.

Also check out this, which looks like nothing you've ever seen on SNL before.

And, if you want to understand who she is, listen to this song.

As far as I'm concerned, with the following line, Ke$ha took ownership of rock and roll, which, let's face it, has fallen way behind on its payments:
"Rat-a-tat-tat on your dum-dum drum
The beat's so fat, gonna make me come"

I've been really loving your coverage of Ke$ha, Paul. Really solid live eyewitness reporting/analysis and pop culture extrapolation. More, more!

Sorry Ke$ha, Goldfrapp was all over the animal-headed people before you were.

Still, I want those unicorns as my party guests, and I fucking hate parties. But I'd allow unicorns. And Ke$ha should have been killed by the unicorns.

"I don't appreciate you Slander-beeking my name, Ke-dollar sign-ha."

That line was awesome.

@6: The only other SNL performance that truly raised a "WTF?!" response similar to Kesha's was Kate Bush over 30 years ago. (I'm showing my age.) Completely mystified the audience.

I don't care! If I want complex, and cerebral I'll listen to Radiohead. But if I want to dance with Unicorns (and I REALLY do want to dance with Unicorns) Ke$ha is now my girl.

@12 God I love Kate Bush. We need more artists like her. She's an odd one, but always in a creative, lovely way. Maybe Janelle Monae comes close to her.
