I'm just going to do my best to type the events of this video as they happen. I only watched it once earlier and I don't remember seeing it ever before, but it's really something else. The video opens with an inferred romantic interest saying in a not very sincere voice that he's happy that the band is doing well, and then he makes an off-handed remark about a haircut. Cut to Aimee Mann, who plays with said hair, then another shot of the band with Aimee Mann staring into the camera after admitting that she's frightened of what she might find when she tries to read the mean boyfriend's mind.
Then the mean boyfriend is drinking some diet soda with ice cubes while wearing a tank top and he seems really mad about something. He picks up a piece of paper and crumples it. More band footage with Aimee Mann seated in a rolling office chair, cut to a restaurant scene where mean boyfriend takes off Aimee Mann's earrings and presents her with new earrings that he likes better. In this scene, Aimee Mann is dressed very much like Kim Cattrall from the 1987 masterpiece Mannequin and feigns happiness about the earring switch, but you can sense that something is amiss. Cut to serious band footage, every note and beat meaning the world to everybody involved. Next up Aimee Mann is leaving a brownstone apartment carrying a guitar case in the wintertime, there is snow on the ground. She seems happy and encounters the mean boyfriend at the bottom of the stairs. The meeting initially seems friendly, but it soon becomes obvious that he's upset that she's on her way to band practice. She storms off down the street, he's left behind seething.
The next scene appears to be later in the evening, Aimee Mann arrives home to the mean boyfriend who has been waiting and is obviously very angry. Non-song dialogue occurs again as the boyfriend chastises Aimee Mann by saying, "What happened, practice run late? You know, this little hobby of yours has gone too far. Why can't you for once do something for me?" Aimee Mann replies, "Like what?" Then something resembling a sexual assault occurs, during which Aimee Mann's hairstyle & color changes from awesome to not awesome. Cut to a scene of a fancied up Aimee Mann and mean boyfriend at Carnegie Hall. Soon mean boyfriend discovers Aimee Mann has been concealing a braided rat-tail. Boyfriend is obviously furious, Aimee Mann can no longer take it and starts singing the songs lyrics, much to the dismay of the other people at the theater, all of whom are now staring at her. She stands. Arm movements occur. Fade to black.
Sorry I couldn't find a non-advert version of the video. H/t to Steve Five for introducing me to this gem.
