Who Had a Greater Crowd Draw, Mad Rad or Archers of Loaf?

Posted by on Mon, May 30, 2011 at 2:50 PM

Seattle rap dragons Mad Rad played at nearly the same time on Sunday afternoon as Chapel Hill, North Carolina's recently reformed Archers of Loaf. The distance between both stages was approximately 2,000 feet. At a 2011 music festival in Eastern Washington, which of the two are people most likely wanting to watch?

Vote now and see the results after the jump.

Actual creative loafing.
  • Actual creative loafing.

The answer to this question is Mad Rad by far. Not only were there crowd chants before the show and kids losing their minds for the entire duration, but it seemed to get bigger as it went on. The Archers of Loaf crowd dissipated slowly while they played, but minds were certainly lost during their penultimate song of the night, "Web In Front." Just not enough minds for this particular contest.

Please note: I used the word penultimate correctly in this post.

And the unfortunate thing is, as Whitney Houston believes, the child are OUR FUTURE.

I don't hate Mad Rad by any means, but this is ridiculous. Shame on anyone who chose them over the Loaf.

To be fair, the crowd thickened after this pic was taken. Archers of Loaf were one of the highlights of the whole weekend for me.

A better question would be, why aren't you allowed to get any closer to the stage? No matter who you're seeing it looks boring as hell.

If only Archers would play in town. If...only...

At least it was partly broadcast on KEXP. That is, until the swears kicked in. Djs didn't seem to know how to deal with that. Still, great to hear them again. Those were some of the best live shows backintheday.

Dod, the DJs can slap that dump button but only so many times in a given amount of time.

@10: That area is for photographers to use for the first 3 songs of the set. The rest of the time they're filled with cross-armed dudes in yellow shirts. By the looks on their faces, those cross-armed dudes hate everything that exists in the world.

@12: Pretty sure the word on the street is they'll be touring this fall, and back in the Northwest.

I wonder if anyone will remember Mad Fad in 10 years.

Casual Observer has been saying that for what, 3 years now? It must suck to be bothered so much by something that lots of other people like. I feel for you. You don't like Mad Rad, good for you. Now go away. Enjoy whatever music it is you enjoy. Stuff you remember always. I'm sure it's all great great music, that we should all like. And I'm sure Mad Rad will miss you at their next show. I'm sure it's a terrible loss to them and their fans that don't like them. You're brave, Casual Observer. Remember that. Remember that you matter.

Tell us who we should like instead. Tell us who's not a fad. For those of us that want to really have fun at shows and lose our minds for a second. Tell us who we should go see. Tell us who you are going to remember in 10 years.

It should also be noted that Flogging molly was playing at the same time and undoubtedly took archers fans that would have chosen them over Mad Rad

LOL, people give a shit about who's favorite band is more popular. Specifically, more popular at a festival in bumfuck, WA. Larry, Derek, I am dissapoint.

Fair enough. Mad Rad seems to attract more than it's fair share of hate around here. Which is an on-going thing, and something I can imagine caring about.

But Sasquatch is just a big, irritating music festival. I am so not down with the price and amount of shit you have to put up with to try to enjoy what is basically more music than I want to hear in a weekend. And the weather, and the camping, and well... it attracts A Certain Crowd, I'd say.

And Archers of Loaf is old and sorta obscure.

And Mad Rad is new, and well known in the Seattle area at least.

The crowd size thing isn't really the point, at this point, right?

Nobody was surprised, although I know you meant that figuratively. I think you basically meant "older white people generally like old punk bands more than new-ish rap acts," which, yeah, I'm not going to argue with that. Or your co-workers could take it personal-like, and maybe they should?

I dunno. But I'd like to see this teased out a bit more, perhaps in a multiple sentence format.

Bah, the edit function needs a little more hand holding than I provided. I meant to add at the bottom: "I'm probably full of shit on at least a couple of points above." Not even bragging.
