Very Progressive: Operation ID on Hollow Earth Radio June 25

I saw Operation ID perform at the Comet June 12 for a Noise for the Needy benefit show. I had no idea what to expect. What the young Seattle band delivered threw me for a pleasant loop: It’s not every year that you hear a local rock band evoke the mellifluous, complex prog rock of Gentle Giant.

Operation ID were quirky, but not too quirky, able to spazz out at crazy angles or to summon passages of deep hypnosis not unlike Steve Reich, albeit with a Canterbury scene fetish. They were tight, but unlike a lot of prog groups, Operation ID exuded a fun spirit. Proving that odd time signatures don’t have to equal furrowed brows and grim visages, they played an exhilarating, exuberant set, providing a strong sense of progress for Seattle’s progressive-rock movement (it’s there, you just have to look thoroughly to find it).

Check out Operation ID’s excellent recent album, Legs, on the local Table & Chairs label here. Operation ID play live on Hollow Earth Radio Sat. June 25 and July 16 at Black Lodge.
