Dave Matthews Loves Local Bands; Is Dave Matthews Cool?

Posted by on Thu, Jul 28, 2011 at 1:56 PM

First, Dave Matthews fell in love with the Head and the Heart and took them on tour and now they're famous. Next up? The Moondoggies! The Hardly Art band has a spot on the Dave Matthews Band Caravan next month.

The Moondoggies also just paid tribute to Bob Dylan by covering his song "You Ain't Goin Nowhere." Have a listen at their Facebook page (warning: you gotta like the page to get the song).

So, wait, is Dave Matthews cool now? Because Liz Phair, the Roots, the Flaming Lips, Devotchka, and Fitz and the Tantrums are playing dates on the DMB Caravan, too. And those bands and musicians are cool, right? So...

Isn't it a time-honored tradition for uncool acts to borrow cred by picking a good opener? Win-win: DMB gets mentioned non-derogatorily in Pitchfork, the opener gets to pay its rent on time for a while.

He's a likable & decent fellow who does a really good job making unlistenable music. I'm pretty sure this has been the consensus expert belief for about two decades now.

I understand that nice people can be in shitty bands--it happens a lot. But ultimately, how cool can you really be if the music you make is so completely uncool? At what point does the uncool cancel out the cool? Vice versa? SO MANY QUESTIONS!

Judging by how many once 'uncool' musicians have been embraced un/ironically in the last ten to fifteen years, Dave Matthews Band will be the karaoke selection of choice by 2020 and everyone will claim they always appreciated them.

Liz Phair is pulling double duty of opening then picking up broken water pipes on the Gorge grounds once the festival is over. It's like being paid twice! Times are hard for an aspiring rapper that also appeared on the Lilith Faire. Not much work out there for that and even less demand.

First of all Journey is awful - I bet you would say the same for the Eagles. Talk about terrible music. I digress, DMB WAS cool - about 10 years ago when he was playing bars (not clubs, bars with barely a stage). He would play a few tunes, talk to people, grab a beer and make a toke and sing some more songs that were not on the radio. That's cool. He's just not "cool" anymore to most of you guys because, God forbid, you can hear him on top 40 radio (something I abhor) and your mom likes him. His stuff now is bad, though.

Liking local bands makes you less cool, not more cool. However, being uncool is cool now, and being cool is SERIOUSLY uncool. Conclusion:

Dave Matthews is the only guy who has ever been cool. Ever.

Dave Matthews is a fine, upstanding member of the community and should be generally regarded as such.

His music is immensely popular although I never much cared for it. I don't think it's bad, just really not my thing.

You guys are a rough crowd. Glad I'm not playing for you. He's alright and so is his band. The music is a tad oddly structured, but the drummer is way slammin' good! Just listen to 'em.

The guy is trying to help out local bands and get them in front of national audiences.
How is that a question of being "uncool?"
So a bunch of frat kids started listening to his music and suddenly he lost his cred. The guys a talented musician who is trying to use his success to help other people achieve success of their own. He was a huge advocate for getting KEXP in the old Seattle Center Fun Forest location. He's trying to HELP us!

Cool the hipster snobbery for a second and lets commend the guy for his efforts. He doesn't HAVE to take an active interest in local music, he chooses to because he WANTS to. We should be thanking him for that.

Besides, the guy probably doesn't give a shit if we think he's cool or not, I wouldn't either if I was sitting on a pile of money and gold records.

Rich - not cool - very rich is what Dave Matthews is. His concerts sell out months in advance (regardless of ticket price), his albums do extremely well, and he hasn't had a "hit" in many years.

I don't get it, but there's so much in current tastes that I don't get, that I kind of don't worry about it anymore.

Dave Matthews is most possibly a nice guy, maybe even coo. But musically speaking I can think of few other artists that would be more torturous to hear on repeat. Mostly its his singing voice.

His music is not cool. But the lineup of opening acts for his Gorge stand is very interesting. Shit, he has Edward Sharpe, Devotchka, and Gogol Bordello opening, 3 bands on my must see list. So he has good taste in what he listens to. Maybe his audience isn't the yupified perversion of hippiedom that I thought it was. I still don't like his music.
And I've heard from a former landscaper of his that he is, in fact, cool.

I'm not a fan of his music, but those are good warm-up acts. Also, he does some nice stuff around town without asking for any credit, and the times he's come in to our place he's been pretty cool (maybe a little buzzed).

I'd loved to have a drink with him and find out how got suckered into that Adam Sandler movie?

Best thing DMB ever did was lure Dan Healy away from the Grateful Dead back in 1993 or so to do their live sound. As a 'retired' Dead taper, I wasn't a big fan of the move (Cutler sucks). I feel about Dave like I do Jesus: I would like the guy if he wasn't fictional, but I really dislike most of his followers.
Posted by drewl on July 28, 2011 at 6:03 PM · Report this
I've heard nothing but positive things from people who have run into him.

He has decent music (although I'm unfamiliar with the last decade's worth). The problem is it was VERY overplayed. For awhile you couldn't escape DMB.

DMB - not cool (since you're asking), but it some ways that just makes me accept them more.
Dave Matthews - definitely cool

I have loved Dave Matthews Band, and Dave Matthews, un-ironically, since I was in middle school. I feel like because he became a frat standard, he became associated with that, and became unbearable. But I love his songs, and yeah DMB is full of some of the most talented musicians of the last, and maybe next, 20 years.
So I voted for cool up there, but that's not really what matters.

@4 nails it. if people give other people shit for liking good music made by bad people, shouldn't we by virtue give people shit for liking good people who make bad music? and the fact that the good people who've made the bad music in this case once dumped actual shit on a boatload of people is exactly the kind of dramatic irony that should render this entire discussion moot. Dave Matthews = not cool.

then again, my girlfriend told me he once came into get his hair cut and DMB just happened to be playing at the same time. another hairdresser flipped about how much she hated them without recognizing Matthews. I guess he laughed about it all the same, so at least we know that if Dave Matthews were to read this stupid post right now, I doubt his feelings would be hurt.

@50. Just like REM. I think DM is probably a cool guy as a person. I wouldn't describe his music as cool.

But, I'd submit, same thing happened to REM and everything REM did before Green (and some stuff after), is, as far as I'm concerned, still cool despite having been "claimed" by Southern Pi Phi Delta Kappa Alpha Nu whatevers. Of course, early REM was better than early DM, but then, Michael Stipe became an intolerable dick with fame. Maybe, cancels each other out.

Hmmm, bottom line: if I were a musician, I'd probably not want the frat following. Kind of effs everything up.

By showing his support for The Head and The Heart, The Moondoggies and others he's giving those bands a chance to get their music out to the (national) public. I don't believe he's doing that just to make money, I think he just digs their tunes and wants to help out some people in the same industry as him. I saw him at the Showbox (met him too) for The Head and The Heart. He was enjoying the music right along with us in the crowd.
He was very polite and very responsive. He didn't ignore me, or tell me not to approach him in public. He said thank you and shook my hand. That makes him a cool person in my book.
I've been a fan of his music and him for over 10 years now, it seems like I'm a minority on this wall and I'm not trying to start a fight with all the people on here. Bitching is what the internet is for - bitch away.

Boyd Tinsley (violin) and Carter Beauford (drummer) are two of the best musicians on the planet. Music might be irritating but their talent can't be denied. Most people reading this site are "too cool" for anything even remotely mainstream anyway. Too busy getting meaningless tattoos and biking around on fixed-wheels in a city that screams for gears.

People that spend this much time discussing how "cool" an artist or their music is, and can apparently only like music if it is "cool" are the worst type of music fans in the world.
