Rolling Stone Readers Have Lost Their Minds

Posted by on Thu, Aug 4, 2011 at 8:17 AM

The results of a Reader Poll asking "Who is the best punk rock band of all time?":

10. Bad Brains
9. Social Distortion
8. The Misfits
7. Black Flag
6. Iggy and the Stooges
5. The Dead Kennedys
4. The Sex Pistols
3. The Ramones
2. The Clash

And the winner is...

I remember being a teen fan of early Green Day. After one of their shows in Seattle we spotted their tour van outside of a hotel near the venue. Then we spotted the bass player walking toward the front door with two girls. We jumped out and followed them. When they got to the front door, the concierge wouldn't let them in. "There's not going to be a party here tonight," he said through the intercom (the door locked). "If you don't let us in I'm gonna get really fucking pissed man," bass guy whined in a voice unbecoming of a teen punk rock idol. Then we left.

Nothing could possibly be more punk rock than ranking punk rock groups in Rolling Stone magazine.

(PS: the correct answer is Buzzcocks)

Amazingly, Green Day also won Best Christian Rock Group, Best Jazz Fusion and Best Solo Female Country Artist.

I knew it was going to be fucking Green Day. Music is dead. And rest in peace America.

@6, it could have been worse. It could have been Blink 182.

RS made it pretty clear on their page: "What we didn't count on were fan site Green Day Authority and the band's official site at both posting the link and asking fans to vote for Green Day – which gave the group a significant boost in the final tally."

It's about as significant as a slog poll. Why are you in a tizzy?

use the internet for polling = fail. trolling? yes. polling? no.

@8 Now I can't stand their fans (and I have a friend working on her second book about the band).

@all - oh please. Punk music - or at least, all the bands on that list - consists of some of the most cynical marketing in the history of pop music (and all punk music IS pop music). What better way to get angsty, loser white kids to buy your records than to create a thin veil of quasi-anti-establishment nonsense? The only time the script went even slightly off is when Nancy was killed - but really, it turned out to be no different than a reality star getting drunk and drowning in a hot tub.

So please. Stop pretending that putting Green Day at the top of a list of punk (pop) bands is sullying some kind of pure music ethos. They were, to a man, in it to sell records and MAKE MONEY.

I was surprised that Green Day didn't even make KEXP listeners 555 favorite artists…

Well, first off, you have to remember that Rolling Stone is not a rock magazine- hasn't been for a long time. So.... their polls are not going to be reflective of real rock fans. Second... Wait, I still cannot get my fucking head around Green Day, even as shitty as RS is, their readers said Green Day? Fucking really? Wow. What a sad commentary on Rolling Stone.

Rolling Stone took five minutes off between Katy Perry photoshoots to come up with this poll. Let's ask the really knowledgeable music fans, the ones that go to Rolling Stone's website, to come up with a definitive answer.

The poll of who the best blues musician of all time will be conducted by mail in vote from Downy dryer sheet buyers.

Remember when they played End Fest at the Kitsap Bowl and Billie was talking mad sh!t about how they were the last Heavy Metal band around and how much better Green Day is than every other band ever? And then the Foo Fighters came out next and Dave Grohl was laughing about how much Green Day sucked and proceeded to show us all what a real rock band is about. I remember because it was AWESOME!!!!

Every other band on that list is at least 25+ years past their heyday. Lots of tweens and younger kids dig Green Day as well. I'd rather they liked Green Day than Katy Perry or BEP or 3OH!3 or whatever.

I think even Green Day would disagree with this.

the whole idea of a best ever punk rock band is so NOT punk rock
