Sly Stone Vs. The Raincoats: "Runnin' Away"

Posted by on Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 4:21 PM

Even when the news is bad, a reminder of a legendary songwriter's work is a nice way to immerse your day in the sounds that they've created. But when it comes to Sly & the Family Stone's "Runnin' Away," I've always preferred the version by the Raincoats. Actually, listening to both right now, I might lean back toward the original version. Either way, whoa, what an incredible track.

Sly Stone always makes me think of the incredible music photography of Chicago's Jim Newberry, here's a classic shot from 1982.

Which do you prefer?

Never heard that Raincoats track either. Hope Sly finds his way out of his troubles soon.

Great song! Was doing a post about it myself - http://firstkisslips.blogspot.com/2012/0… - and very glad I came across yours. Thanks for the tip about The Raincoats cover! It's not on the version of Moving that I have.
