I came all this way to comment and #4 beat me to it. If you want control over the use of your intellectual property, well you can't sell it off to the first person who waves a check under your nose. It is a monetary sacrifice Maroon 5 had the chance to make, but chose to instead get a nicer bus for tour, or maybe buy themselves something pretty. Now their songs are being used to promote things they disagree with. Tough shit.

Owners of publishing rights are entitled to make weird decisions about where they want their music used. If you don't wanna hear your song used to sell iphones or hondas or right-wing fanaticism, then don't sell it, and keep working your day job.

Do you actually know that Maroon 5 sold off their publishing rights willy-nilly? In today's music biz, it's pretty easy not to have the control you would like as an artist. Some of us don't have the option of being happy working our day job. making our art is the only way to stay sane, and the only way to make that feasible is to sell it sometimes. An artist has the right to say where they do or do not want their art displayed, even if they don't have the ability to legally control it.
