Seeing Wild Flag at Neumos last night was like being caught in the middle of a major seismic event. Carrie Brownstein's prayer-inducing high kicks, Janet Weiss's blissfully mesmerizing drumming, Mary Timony tearing up vocals, and Rebecca Cole destroying the keyboards in jaw-droppingly tight rock and roll. Earlier in the evening, Drew Grow and the Pastor's Wives opened, performing as if animated by bolts of lightning, all enthusiastic movements and full-throated, heartfelt screams. Both Portland(ish) bands praised the sold-out Seattle audience, Grow thanking the city for all of its support during his recovery from a car accident this January, and Wild Flag praising the audience's "fearlessness" in contrast to Portland's alleged timidity. Since writing new songs are still on the to-do list, the encore closed with the band taking on the Ramones' "Judy Is a Punk" and Television's "See No Evil".
It was the first show that I can remember grabbing earplugs for self-preservation and I still left the show a little deaf.
More photos of both bands after the jump.
