"I smoke and I drink and I sing. I should be dead! I’m living on borrowed time!"
Luis Arriaga (Wild Records, Luis & the Wildfires) to L.A. Record

Luis and his San Fernando brethren in the Wildfires are not here to waste your time. No airs, no graces. They sink their teeth into Joy Division's "Digital" and refuse to let go until there's nothing left. If I didn't know better, I'd swear he wrote the thing rather than some pasty-faced lad from Macclesfield. In his bones, Luis knows what it's like to feel it closing in, day in, day out, day in, day out.

Your mileage may vary, but I've never heard a better Curtis cover, and I doubt I ever will. (For the record, I'm not a casual JD fan. I fucking love that band.)

Stand-up bass: take that, Peter Hook!

"Digital" marks the last song Joy Division performed during their final UK concert on May 2, 1980. Two weeks later, Ian Curtis was dead and the band was over.

But their legacy lives on in unexpected places, like Rockabilly Fridays in Reseda.
