Not only did the Norwegian band practically define the genre, they operated at the epicenter of the notorious unpleasantness that made the scene a household name. Consequently, they were crucial subjects for the recent black-metal documentary Until the Light Takes Us, wherein drummer Hellhammer praises Emperor drummer Faust for murdering a homosexual. Really, asshole? For all your anti-Christian posturing, you're gonna buy into one of its most archaic and conservative mores? Take a cue from Gorgoroth, who were banned from Poland for pissing off the Catholic Church while singer Gaahl was blowing dudes on the side. Their homo-fronted Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam album is more terrifyingly blasphemous than your supposed classic De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. BRIAN COOK
