The documentary Such Hawks Such Hounds: Scenes from the American Hard Rock Underground can be viewed in its entirety on YouTube. The 84-minute film—directed by Jessica Hundley and John Srebalus—covers the years 1970-2007, interviewing current players in the heavy-metal, hard-rock, and psych scenes. Some of the talking heads featured include Mudhoney’s Mark Arm, Earthless, Sunn O))), High on Fire, Comets on Fire, Sleep, Kyuss, Om, Mammatus, Joe Preston, and Bardo Pond. Interesting observation: Author Joe Carducci (Rock and the Pop Narcotic) cites the prevalence of cocaine use among musicians and producers as hastening the decline of hard rock. Fun fact: Sleep spent $75,000 on custom-made amps and guitars in the recording of Jerusalem (aka Dopesmoker).
