I'll Give You a Break, Pt. 34: Yoko Ono's "What Did I Do!"

[I’ll Give You a Break is a sporadic series of posts highlighting obscure (and not so obscure) breakbeats in unlikely places, so that they may be sampled by producers or just enjoyed for their own geeky purposes. NB: Don’t forget to clear all samples through the proper channels (cough).]

The first 19 seconds of Yoko Ono’s “What Did I Do!” (from her classic 1972 LP Approximately Infinite Universe) offer a brassy, almost Meters-like funk churn (with a hint of the Band’s “Up on Cripple Creek,” for good measure) with which to underscore your next bars full of LL Cool J-esque double entendres. (This is probably the funkiest number in which John Lennon's ever been involved, beating out "Come Together" and "Cold Turkey" by a nose hair.) Yoko’s mad ululations deserve further sampling for some other tracks you should think about working on. Make a (bent) note of it.
