As Grant mentioned in his column this week, Rhode Island’s The Body play Black Lodge tonight. Their set at The Comet last fall was one of my musical highlights of 2011, an aural avalanche of unfathomably bleak and brutal noise. As an added bonus, the Providence duo rolls through Seattle with Baton Rouge sludge lords Thou. The Louisiana band’s 2010 LP Summit isn't quite as adventurous as The Body’s All The Waters of Earth Shall Turn to Blood—there’s no 10-minute choir interludes or extended samples of The Church Universal & Triumphant’s apocalyptic chanting—it’s still a shining example of tasteful and clever elaboration on the doom/sludge formula. Yes, there’s still the requisite low-tuned guitars and howling vocals, but the band knows that their heavy moments are all the more powerful when tempered with dynamics in tempo, melody, and instrumentation. Thou hinted that they might be calling it quits after fulfilling their touring plans for this spring, so this could be your last chance to catch the band live. You’ve been warned.
