Gear / Nerd A Record Player That Plays Trees???

This is all over the interwebs. I can't believe it's real. A record player that can play slices of wood? Makes me wonder what a monkey tail, or as Charles Mudede would call it a "monkey puzzle tree" would sound like...

No, no, no. This has been making the rounds lately and I'm afraid it's just not as cool as it looks - as we all wish it was. First of all, the sounds don't come from the patterns on the tree.... basically it's a really good camera that picks up only very coarse information and cues MIDI notes on a shitty Kurzweil piano patch. I would love to hear what a real one of these would actually sound like though.

I've not heard monkey tail before; they've always been monkey puzzles to me. Interesting.
