We initially posted about PDX/SEA oneiric minimalist-pop unit Orcas’ self-titled debut album coming out in February on Morr Music. That date has been pushed back to April 24. You can get a teaser for the LP below with "Carrion," a mistily melancholic beauty of a tune. Orcas consist of Rafael Anton Irisarri (aka the Sight Below), Thomas Meluch (aka Benoît Pioulard), and Kelly Wyse (keyboardist for Pollens).

More info and tracklisting after the cut.

Haze-pop auteur Benoît Pioulard and post-minimalist composer Rafael Anton Irisarri (The Sight Below) have joined forces under the name Orcas to release their debut album with Morr Music, due out on April 24. Depicted as "haunting and beautiful" by Portland Mercury, the self-titled LP bridges together the furthest aspects of the duo's previous solo work that's been published on Kranky, Touch, Miasmah, Room40, and Ghostly International. Listen to Orcas' first single "Carrion" and its cover of Broadcast's "Until Then," commemorating the late singer Trish Keenan, at Pitchfork.

NPR once noted, Benoît Pioulard (aka Thomas Meluch) "writes like a Classics major and sings with the warmth and conviction of a true romantic." Fascinated by natural sounds and the textures of decay, the Portland-based artist has sought to create a unique sonic environment by combining remnants of pop song structures with the lushness and unpredictability of field recordings. Pitchfork states, Seattle-based Rafael Anton Irisarri's work "embodies the hybrid genre...an undifferentiated welter of pop, techno, and classical." As The Sight Below, his releases with Ghostly International have been acclaimed world-wide by publications like URB, Wired, XLR8R, Popmatters, and Drowned in Sound among others.

The duo's music together is a careful balance of chiaroscuro elements, where pop hook and spatial ambience converge. Orcas has taken an immersive, fluid vector for their passions; a resonant call like sonar from the depths.
