Mark Lanegan's Blues Funeral

Compositionally, Blues Funeral resembles Here Comes That Weird Chill, the EP of stodgy and brain-swelled "Oddities & Outtakes" from 2004's brooding and lovely Bubblegum in that songs head straight, on an unwavering tear until they're done, only here things are more polished. Bubblegum's dynamics are traded for the what Sean Nelson called the "drone imperative." There are a few missteps here—the needless guitar noodling of "Riot in my House," and the woozy synth of "Quiver Syndrome"—and he messes more with inhuman rhythm makers than ever before, but even Lanegan's day-rate moteltronica™ is more compelling than lots of smilar ilk who are moving units out there. Overall, this is a lovely addition to the Lanegan Canon™. Listen below.

Blues Funeral drops tomorrow, Feb 7.

Hey, with a new Lanegan album out, maybe we'll get through 2012 intact, after all...

And maybe he'll play The Neptune again when he goes on tour!
