Mix Highbrow Sonic Acrobatics: Dominique Leone's Prog Mix

Because I have a soft spot for quixotic endeavors—i.e., trying to convince 21st-century music fans that a lot of amazing prog-rock exists, for one—I present to you a mix of said music by ex-Pitchfork writer/current excellent multi-instrumentalist/composer Dominique Leone. This mix surfaced in late 2009, but it will always stand outside of time, in my mind. Leone’s idea of prog is refreshingly diverse enough to encompass tracks by Squarepusher, David Bowie, This Heat, Cardiacs, Zs, and Franco Leprino, while satisfying traditionalists with cuts by Yes, King Crimson, and Magma. Dig in and feel your musical IQ skyrocket.

I would even include Dirty Projectors, White Denim, and The Decemberists alongside Porcupine Tree and Curved Air in any prog-rock hoedown/mix/whatever.

For a faux avant-garde pitchfork reviewer turned latent musician, it seems eerily mundane to refer to yourself as 'abstract expression'. I'd love to see the same Pitchfork 'treatment' given to him that he has given to musicians who are actually creative.

Tortoise: So wait, the guy who says Squarepusher is self indulgent, has he actually sat down and *listened* to any of his own stuff?
Achilles: Probably not, since can only see from inside a bubble of self congratulatory music critic circle jerking
Tortoise: Is he aware of the concept of seeing oneself from the outside?
Achilles: I think he's probably aware that he's having a mid life crisis.
Tortoise: K.. cause i thought so, how much repression is there on something like that?
