MondreMAN and
Squadda B, Oakland's
best duo ever, just announced a string of US dates, which aside from a stop at Pomona College, include zero West Coast dates. Where's the freaking love? (
Or the freakin' sweatshirt I ordered in Novemeber, Squadda??) I'll have to make do seeing them at SXSW, because for my money, despite all the hype for
Goblin and even
LifeLoveASAP, Main Attrak's
808's & Dark Grapes II (which you can
DL for free from the good folks at Mishka) was the superior rap album. Less floated on controversy or of-the-moment beat/fashion choices,
808s sparkles like their "
Diamond Of God"; unassuming, almost monkishly ascetic (besides all the blunts), and brimming with a certain off-the-cuff ghetto Zen, the young two-piece delivered one of my favorite albums of 2011, one that has stood up to more repeat listens than any of their contemporaries. (The solo mixtapes each has dropped since that album have similarly been potent dope.) Good news, then, that
808s is soon seeing a vinyl release; get your pre-order on over at
Rough Trade. God bless you sleepyheads who have no idea what I'm talking about, as usual.
Last but not least, a new MP3 to go with all this news, for a celebratory-sounding Tyler Bisson-produced joint called "Focalin":
