[I’ll Give You a Break is a sporadic series of posts highlighting obscure (and not so obscure) breakbeats in unlikely places, so that they may be sampled by producers or just enjoyed for their own geeky purposes. NB: Don’t forget to clear all samples through the proper channels (cough).]
The first 15 seconds of Family’s “Part of the Load” (from the 1970 LP Anyway) sound like something off Miles Davis’ Get Up With It—which is pretty odd, considering Family are a British prog-rock band. Anyway (rimshot), the suspense-building funk rhythm from that intro can lay the foundation for a tight track simmering with urban paranoia. And who doesn’t like a cracking bit of urban paranoia in his/her music? Only a fool, mate.
