What the world needs now is a piracy ethic, and I do not mean the kind pushed by Hollywood and the global entertainment industry. Those people imagine an inflexible ethic; I'm thinking of a very flexible one...
As for those who think I do not know jack about or been hit by piracy, go here. I've lost thousands to pirates, but my position still stands: no to a blanket ban on piracy; yes to the promotion of a flexible piracy ethic.
I agree with your point about a blanket ban, but I would like to respectfully push back on the assertion that you have lost thousands of dollars as a result of piracy. As a producer of a movie that can now be found on multiple torrent sites, I understand the tendency to count each download of viewing as a lost sale. The truth of the matter is that just because an individual will download your movie for free or watch it on YouTube doesn't mean that they would purchase it. Furthermore, plenty of research shows the people often find your work via piracy, and if they like it, will purchase more of your work in the future. In that way, the internet acts like a library. Users sample lots of products and only purchase the ones they like best.
