Record Nerd Shit: Insurance?

Posted by on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 1:00 PM

If you have a ton of records, like me, DO YOU INSURE THEM? Or don'tcha? Outside of a fire that could destroy them, or water damage that could spoil the sleeves/mold your jams en masse, do you think you really NEED insurance? What about THEFT?! Do creepers break into houses to steal albums now?!?

At some level of collecting, a few thousand records perhaps, I'd say...YUPS, get insurance! Thankfully, my policy is for a flat amount, so, unlike the guy in the vid, I don't need to write every single record down and then have its individual value assessed. Gosh, keeping a list and changing it as I upgrade copies would be so much work I'D NEED AN INTERN! Right, so any thoughts? Anyone ever lost everything and was covered by insurance all easy breezy, or were fucked over by their insurance? Or perhaps lost every last record in a fire and then went NUTS, never to buy a record again.

I had the kitchen sink back up while I was away for a week and my bottom shelf albums got severely gunked. I wished I had insurance. 12 years later I'm still uninsured. What does Segal think about this?

Keep all of your records well off the floor and get an attack dog.

Rental insurance is dirt cheap...like $12 a month.

What #3 said. When I was renting I think I was paying $250 a year for $30k in coverage.
