Cloud Nothings, Mr. Dream

(Crocodile) Cleveland foursome Cloud Nothings have perhaps the archetypal band name for this precise moment of MP3 disposability. Hearing that name, one has to try to muster the energy to shrug. Fortunately, Cloud Nothings' new album, Attack on Memory, is not the expected spindly, third-generation Xerox of second-tier '90s lo-fi, but rather, aggressive, heart-on-sleeve post punk. They're at their best when they accelerate with amphetamine verve, as on the Dream Syndicate–like epic of scorching guitar fury called "Wasted Days" and the speed-demonic Feelies-esque rock of "Separation." Mr. Dream are notable for containing Adam Moerder and Nick Sylvester, who've written for the New Yorker and the Village Voice and Pitchfork. Their Mission of Burma–like post punk comes with smartly contoured guitar clamor and acquired-taste, white-guy vocals. DAVE SEGAL

Crocodiles, Bleeding Rainbow

(Sunset) Did you guys hear that Black Tambourine reunited for some East Coast shows, the first they've played in 21 years? Supposedly it's for Chickfactor magazine's 20th-anniversary party, but I'm betting they also got sick of so many bands out there aping their style. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) Bleeding Rainbow—who happen to sport one of the best band names ever and a shoegaze/noise-pop-with-lovely-vocals sound—are just one of such bands currently on the circuit. For those keeping track, Crocodiles' 2010 album, Sleep Forever, is a gorgeous collection of gripping fuzz-guitar trajectories, and the lead single off their upcoming Endless Flowers suggests it will be, too.
