Shit Talk What the Funk? Seattle's Funk Community Hates Me (and Thinks I'm Racist, Too)

It started with a joke in this piece about getting your music played on the radio:
Before you send anything, know who you're sending it to.
If you're a metal band, don't send your music to the hiphop show. If you're a funk band, don't send your music to a heavy metal radio station (also, don't be a funk band). It sounds like obvious advice, right? Nope. I've been hosting Locals Only, the Pacific Northwest music show, for years, and I often receive press packages from bands out of New York and California with clueless letters promising "the Locals Only audience will love us!" Not only is it a waste of time and money, but you look stupid.
First, I WAS KIDDING. It was a joke. Second, I do not like funk but that doesn't mean everyone who does should stop playing it. BECAUSE I WAS JOKING. But my anti-funk comment clearly hit members of the funk community right in the heart as the comments prove.
The letters came via Facebook and e-mail, too. Some excerpts:
...first of all, as a veteran funkster on this scene, fuck you...what kind of snarky racist shit is that?..have you even fucking LISTENED to funk??..why NOT be a funk band?? What's your deal with suggesting to the seattle music scene not be in a band that is black music based?..i'm not mad at ya, sis, but i'm funky..i play the funk, the whole funk, nothin' but..there's quite a funky scene here in seattle...for all my fellow funksters out there,that's some insulting shit you dropped.. you need to apologize to the readers of this paper that do appreciate funk music...

That original comment really IS on some bullshit though. If you don't like or don't get something and dismiss it, you should be able to back it up with why. What if someone wrote "don't be a feminist" - would that be acceptable if it was a joke?
The correct way to make fun of music is to dismiss music that you actually like and fall back on it saying "no, I actually like blah-blah-blah, I was just poking fun at myself". You could've easily substituted "don't be a ska band" and it would've worked loads better. Also, no one would defend ska.

You should talk to Kevin(MAPC) about being outed as once playing in a funk band.. The twee kids were totally dismissing his indie pop cred. They don't realize that funk is so DIY!

Funk is generally really awful. Much like ska or reggae, it seems to be built upon a few mechanical pieces. There seems to be room for 1 or 2 groups to do these things well, and massive numbers of increasingly shitty 3rd and 4th generation copies. If you are in a funk band chances are you are a crime against music.
I appreciated Bible of the Devil's 1999 "End White Funk" tour.

I don't listen to Country Music, but I wouldn't tell someone to not be in a Country band, if thats where their passions lie. Just because you personally don't like the genra, don't make it out to be 'if you want to be as cool as me, don't be in a band like this.' Funk music inspired much of the music we have today, and maybe you should look a bit more into the history and how it started, before you go badmouthing it to such extremes.
Get over yourself. It sounds like you're complaining about people not agreeing with what you're saying, when most of the Seattle populous embraces funk/hip-hop culture with open arms.
I suggest, take a chill pill, put on a Parliament-Funkadelic vinyl on your Urban Outfitters record player, and if you don't like it, don't listen to it, and don't berate others using a method where a LOT of people are going to see it. I mean, how could you even BE surprised over the response?

@19 79-81 were definitely the best years for the specials (although i really love 1996's today's specials. but! poking fun at yourself also means being able to understand why people might think your favorite genre of music is a total clown show. i can with ska because not everything is like the specials. even bands that were influenced by the specials end up being Reel Big Barf. when a genre of music becomes a mockery of itself, nothing is sacred and everything is up for mockery! hence: dont be a funk band.

@4 Yo. I support and defend ska...more that some other popular genres. However, for someone (a musical performer at that) who defends one genre and throws another one 'under the bus' is not cool.

Most funk bands are terrible. Most ska bands are terrible. Most rock bands are terrible. Most pop bands are terrible. There aren't many electronica "bands" -- but of the few there are, mostly terrible. Most bands of any type are terrible.

i didn't read any of the above comments, but the kinda snarky anti-funk sentiment that's become popular always reminds me of the anti-disco movement of the 70's, which IMO did have racist, rockist, anti-young-black-folks undertones. nothing new, and nothing that doesn't still go on, here and elsewhere. not saying you were bringing anything to the table but an innocently-meant joke, of course, just saying.

@22- No. There are specific mechanics to ska, reggae, and to some extent funk that are exceedingly limited and limiting. They function more like what we would call a sub-sub-genre within 'hard rock',
The Specials were great, but they do everything I'd ever want a ska band to do, and there isn't enough inovation within the genre to support 40 years worth of bands. Same can be said for Parliament, or The Wailers, etc.
Punk, because it has come to signify an ethos more than an aesthetic, is not subject to the same restrictions. Beat Happening and Godhead Silo were both 'punk' bands, and there is enough room for inovation within the boundaries that they can both exist in the same 'scene' infrastructure. Can my R an B band play at your funk club? probably not.

@59 -I think you are deliberately missing my point. yes, all genres have good and bad, but what I am specifically saying is that the strictures of some genres are such that there isn't anything but bad-all the good has been used up, and flexibility to support inovations that would permit new bands to go in new directions does not exist. "We're a ska band, but without horns and we don't play on the upstroke" -Well then you are not a ska band.

Hey Megan, I'm the leader of The Staxx Brothers, my name is Davin Michael Stedman and Grant can can go ahead and unblur our band name on those comments from his post. Look you kicked a hornet's nest. And one of the rules of comedy is that you don't kick down. Well you did and you hit some nice people in the teeth. There's a critical prejudice in this town towards Funk music that we don't experience when we play in San Francisco. It's just ironic, and a really hard pill for musicians to swallow, that a compilation of excellent but often blatantly directive recordings reissued by Light in The Attic can get local acclaim, but the music that it influenced and resonates with it today is tossed in the garbage can. There's a reason why Jimi's own childhood friends quietly admit that had he stuck around, he would have died a landscaper. Seattle isn't quite the music town it's supposed to be, especially not for Black musicians. In some ways, with its isolation and unfriendly music critics clinging to the safety of their hipster status, it's a graveyard. Great talent like Allen Stone can make it out, but what about the best singer in Seattle, Caine Watson from Coldnote?
Megan I wrote you an excellent essay about all this, but we can talk about it backstage when I'm covering Sasquatch if you really care to hear my thoughts. You did inspire some good writing - a thesis that I may devote my masters studies to. But for the most part it was a very proficient bitch slap.
The Staxx Brothers are in a unique position in this argument. I've never once billed or advertised us as a funk band. I've said we're a Hard Ass Soul since nearly the beginning, but writers like Dennis Cook co-editor of Jambase.com, that cover our every step and step up to write our liner notes, consider us a funk band. I think it's a compliment. If I try to write an AC/DC song, and it comes out sounding more like Funkadelic or something completely unique, it's better than giving the world another AC/DC song. But I digress...
There's a vibrant Funk/Soul/Groove scene in Seattle with just as much history as its paler skin cousins that the world measures us by. Whether the records stands up, is a very good question. I'm not sure if you're the best person to judge that because you're clearly writing off the genre that is the backbone of the origins of Hip Hop, and later Westcoast G-Funk. It's also much of the DNA and inspiration behind Fela's work in Afrobeat via James Brown. You're kind of missing a really big train.

Draw a line from Ike's Rocket 88 to Ike & Tina's Bold Soul Sister and what if it's all just Rock & Roll, and the honkies just started playing something else that we should have never been oxy moronically labeled soft rock - like Air Supply and America. That Sub Pob / Hardly Art bands like Fleet Foxes & The Head & The Heart aren't Rock & Roll at all...they're just soft rock. Not folk rock - because that's bad ass shit like Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly.
...maybe you're pissing on the real Rock & Roll bands in Seattle. Because while Black Sabbath still had that roll, Metal soon there after lost its groove. Now it's just Rock. Maybe when Rick James coined his music Funk & Roll, he was the Godfather. Maybe the greatest Rock & Roll album of the 70s is Standing on The Verge of Getting It On by Funkadelic - and it turns out you're not a fan of Rock & Roll at all. But The Head & The Heart sure is catchy!
Good ol' Guns & Roses is Rock & Roll, but that incog-negro Slash sure loves James Brown. In fact he's funky as hell.

My professor back in college stopped this Jazz ensemble I was in, mid song and told us we were going to starve out there in the real world if we couldn't play Funk. At first we winced when he said it was the music of our generation. We thought he forgot what year it was. But he got behind the piano and played us Dr. Dre. Then he knocked over his music stand and shouted that Funk is still the music people are going to pay us to play for $10 at the door. His name is Horace Alexander Young and he's right.
The Staxx Brothers are out there on tour in the real world, where we have to play 2-3 sets spanning 3+ hours a night to make $400 in smaller markets as we march onto cities like San Francisco. Out in the country and in the shadow of the Filmore, people need to dance. The bar needs to slang those drinks. I need to pass around the plate for tips and sell CDs (while I still can). Megan Seling, it's hard out there for a pimp.
I love to throw out the country song we throw on each album, I do consider us a Rock & Roll band and we'll melt your fucking face. We're also pretty damn good rappers and our 3-4 part harmonies always go over well. But it's the Hard Ass Soul, that I'm sure you'd equate to Funk, that's going to keep us alive, even after the Zombie apocalypse. Even after KEXP doesn't play our fourth album that once again comes out to exceptional national reviews. Or after we drop our 7th jaw dropping video in 2 years (come May 2nd at Cinebarre). I'm gonna' be me, and that means we're still going to be too funky for Locals Only show. Too Rock for Larry Mizzell's show, to Hip Hop for this, to different for that. Eventually they'll be a spot for us. The North East loves the funk - we're just so far away.
At least now I know why you're not going to play us - no matter how hard Detroit is Dead rocks or how good Sugarwalls sounds on the radio. But hey Dori Donoho over at Clear 101.7 in Bend will, and we need play out on the road much more than we need it around here where we have a draw. Though losing out on the megaphone of KEXP is pretty soul crushing, as it influences listeners around the world - like no other public radio station in the history of the world. I'm sure they'll jump on the band wagon the moment we no longer desperately need their approval.
Megan, don't be scurr'd if you like Jungle Cat (our third album) because it never runs out of ideas. For the record Chris Jury is trippin' about the limitations of sub genres. That's just the product of untalented (or undisciplined) writers -- or critics who can't write music, but can come up with more creative names for sub genres than they can original musical thoughts. I have 100s of songs I'm waiting to develop because I'm a writer. And if you don't have 100s of ideas in the bank, it's because you're not practicing you're craft and writing every day. Put me in a room with actual songwriters and we're gonna' laugh our asses off about sub genres. Every single song you write should help a hack music critic some day come up with a new name for a sub genre.

Even after KEXP doesn't play our fourth album that once again comes out to exceptional national reviews. Or after we drop our 7th jaw dropping video in 2 years (come May 2nd at Cinebarre). I'm gonna' be me, and that means we're still going to be too funky for Locals Only show. Too Rock for Larry Mizzell's show, to Hip Hop for this, to different for that. Eventually they'll be a spot for us. The North East loves the funk - we're just so far away.
At least now I know why you're not going to play us - no matter how hard Detroit is Dead rocks or how good Sugarwalls sounds on the radio. But hey Dori Donoho over at Clear 101.7 in Bend will, and we need play out on the road much more than we need it around here where we have a draw. Though losing out on the megaphone of KEXP is pretty soul crushing, as it influences listeners around the world - like no other public radio station in the history of the world. I'm sure they'll jump on the band wagon the moment we no longer desperately need their approval.
Megan, don't be scurr'd if you like Jungle Cat (our third album) because it never runs out of ideas. For the record Chris Jury is trippin' about the limitations of sub genres. That's just the product of untalented (or undisciplined) writers -- or critics who can't write music, but can come up with more creative names for sub genres than they can original musical thoughts. I have 100s of songs I'm waiting to develop because I'm a writer. And if you don't have 100s of ideas in the bank, it's because you're not practicing you're craft and writing every day. Put me in a room with actual songwriters and we're gonna' laugh our asses off about sub genres. Every single song you write should help a hack music critic some day come up with a new name for a sub genre.

Time for a bit of a local heavy weight to... uh hem... weigh in.
My "radio" name is JJ Nite. Grew up in Tacoma listening to KYAC 1250 AM. Cuz at the time it was the ONLY radio station anywhere that consistently played what we used to call... "BLACK" music... aka soul and funk.
My first radio gig was on Tacoma's beloved KTAC and then I moved to having my own show on former KYAC, then called KFOX... located at 1250 khz on your AM dial. My show aired M-F, 7-12 and was called "The House Party".
I tried desperately to keep FUNK alive in Seattle. But due to something in the drinking water, funk has always had a bit of a battle in Seattle. Maybe Seattle is just so frikkin' liberal and Birkenstocky, it can't handle the true essence of blackness. Not blackness in the "I'm black and you are white sense"... but just the essence of real blackness. (Note: James Brown - I'm Black and I'm Proud)
I'm talkin' about real down and dirty, Mississippi Booger Nose Funk!
Not even actually sure what it is. Maybe it's just as simple as the fact that there are waaaay more white people than black, hence Grunge took hold and flourished. Well for a couple of years.
I get Megan was only kidding. No big Megan, honestly. I've been hearing little jokes and snide remarks about funk here in Seattle for over 25 years. Don't hear it in Atlanta, Cincinnati, New York, and London. You see, Seattle tries to be metropolitan and big city. But sometimes it can't get out of it's own redneck ways.
Rather than spend too much time ranting, I did what any self-respecting DJ that's been spinning since the late 70s would do... START MY OWN DANG' RADIO STATION!!!! While Japan, Atlanta, and Munich have been celebrating Funk Republic Radio now for almost a year, Seattle again is late to the party. (We're one of the fastest growing stations on the net with 30,000 listeners monthly, located in a secret studio down in Olympia - muhahaha)

Tell em' JJ! You just proved Funk is as old as Rock N' Roll. I love it. Nice to have somebody who gives a f*ck about funk and an actual expert in the conversation. If you don't know your history, the present is a mystery, then you say stupid shit and piss on authenticity.
Now JJ I got a theory that New Orleans Funk - second line Funk that goes back to the marching bands and funeral marches and early jazz, holds the key to playing funk off the One. I need to do more research and formulate these ideas, but what is it to play funky with out playing funk? I think our native son Jimi Hendrix might be the shining example of that notion in the world of Rock & Roll. No Jimi no Bitches Brew, no Funkadelic, no KEXP. Would The Temptations have attempted Ball of Confusion and Cloud Nine? The winds were changing but Jimi was a mighty gust from across the ocean (He didn't come out of Seattle, he came out of London, because Seattle was then and now the kind of cow town where critics would tell you not to start a funk band).

They don't understand his legacy nor the depth of his own catalog and influences beyond Flashlight and Bop Gun. And if they did they would lament the tragedy of his decline. It's just amateur hour. This whole exercise sort of reminds me back in the day when I used buy 45s from Tower Records before I DJ'ed a gig. The little $8 an hour butt-wipe walked around the store with this smug, sort of "look-down-your-nose" attitude if you didn't look like some sort of creature from the original bar scene in Star Wars. Interesting comments from all sides...Funk used to be a bad word... but not any more and hasn't been for a long time. I have loved it since I was a kid love it more now than ever.
I have had the opportunity to interview and feature cats from Wheedle's Groove (who never got the respect that they deserved until 30 years after the fact,) Eldridge Gravy and The Court Supreme and Global Heat. Recently, I chatted with Allen Stone and some dudes that played with this cat named Prince back in the 80's (Dr. Fink and BrownMark.) I have played and sang in funk bands as well. I can't get enough of that funky stuff! But it aint' about me, I know..
I tell you what, If you are funky and good.
