Paste Magazine's Top-20 Music Writer Musicians List

Posted by on Tue, Apr 3, 2012 at 2:23 PM

Paste has posted a list of what it perceives to be 20 of the most important music writers who are also musicians. The Stranger’s Brian Cook (Russian Circles) and ex-Stranger writer Zac Pennington (Parenthetical Girls) made the list, but, sadly, Trent Moorman (every hiphop group in Seattle) and Larry Mizell Jr. (Don’t Talk to the Cops!) did not. But the latter two are in good company, as David Toop (Ocean of Sound author and excellent experimental composer) didn’t merit inclusion, either.

Peruse the whole list here.

Scott McCaughey's Searchin USA column in The Rocket turned me on to countless bands in the 80's and 90's.

Props to the writers the author chose to recognize, but I'm a little confused by the chronology and/or criteria, since I thought Kaplan stopped writing decades ago. Via Facebook, Gerard Cosloy suggests a few more active candidates: "Don Howland, Tesco Vee, Thurston Moore, Steve Albini and the Rev. Norb Ugly... On the still-writing tip, where's John Robb or Eric Davidson?"

@2 Yeah, if you're going to include Kaplan, why not Chrissie Hynde or Patti Smith or Lenny Kaye or David Thomas? Some key British writer/musicians were also left out: David Toop, Kevin Martin, David Keenan, Keith Moliné, etc. Plus, no DJ /rupture (Jace Clayton)?!
