Neneh Cherry's New Thing

Member of Rip Rig + Panic, stepdaughter of trumpet player Don Cherry, voice behind the chart-busting "Buffalo Stance," and one-time Michael Stipe duet partner, Neneh Cherry graces this hypnotic cover of the 1980 Suicide cut from Nordic free-jazz unit The Thing (the former Neneh Mariann Karlssson was born in Stockholm). And she sounds fabulous. Other Cherry Thing cover artists include the Stooges, MF Doom, Ornette Coleman, and the late, great Mr. Cherry.

Track listing, original song, and shaky video of the MF Doom track below:

1. Cashback (Neneh Cherry)
2. Dream Baby Dream (Suicide)
3. Too Tough to Die (Martina Topley-Bird)
4. Sudden Movement (Mats Gustafsson)
5. Accordion (MF Doom)
6. Golden Heart (Don Cherry)
7. Dirt (The Stooges)
8. What Reason (Ornette Coleman)

Smalltown Supersound releases The Cherry Thing on June 19, 2012.

As for Suicide (Alan Vega and Martin Rev), they appear to be having a moment. After receiving the LCD Soundsystem cover treatment (Vega's "Bye Bye Bayou"), providing the fuel for M.I.A.'s "Born Free," via the relentless rhythm of "Ghost Rider," several of their songs—"Ghost Rider," "Surrender," and "Be Bop Kid"—appear in Greek filmmaker Athina Rachel Tsangari's Attenberg. Tsangari's second film, which features Dogtooth director Giorgos Lanthimos, opens at the Northwest Film Forum on May 4. (The Cherry Thing hat tip: Marc Masters/Pitchfork.)

Bonus! The Boss also digs the post-Vietnam horror story "Frankie Teardrop," which anticipates his deceptively upbeat, thematically similar "Born in the USA."

I like it, mostly for the repeated theme and insane sax work. And Neneh indeed sounds good. That's the first time I hear one of her tracks, though I know she made at least one record twenty years ago, according to an ancient Entertainment Weekly listing of must-have CD's. I didn't think she'd still be around.

She's released three records as a solo artist. Raw Like Sushi, which features "Buffalo Stance," was her biggest US hit. A duet with Youssou N'Dour, "Seven Seconds," also enjoyed some chart success.
