I don't pay much attention to mixtapes unless I'm interested in the acts behind them, so I wasn't surprised to find myself falling for this globe-trotting collection from Brooklyn's Young Magic, who released their debut, Melt, earlier this year.
Their remix of Doldrums' "Egypt" has also been hitting the spot (mixtape below).
TRACK LISTING:
1. Les Baxter - "Prelude in C# Minor" (Rachmaninoff)
2. Music Emporium - "Velvet Sunsets"
3. The Strangers - "Two to Make A Pair"
4. Mo Kolours - "Banana Wine"
5. Miriam Makeba - "Malouyame"
6. The Electric Prunes - "Agnus Dei"
7. Asha Bholse & Rahul Dev Burman - "Piya Tu Ab To Aaja"
8. NGUZUNGUZU - "Boy Is Mine (Harp Edit)"
9. Teebs - "Just For You (Flipped Gaby Vocals)"
10. KUHN - "Slime Beach"
11. Lianne La Havas - "Forget (Shlohmo Remix)"
12. Nautiluss x Lord Skywave - "Blue Monday"
13. HTRK - "Bendin"
14. Fennesz - "Before I Leave"
15. Gus Gus - "Changes Come"
Young Magic is currently on tour with Boston psych-folk outfit Quilt. The two play Barboza on July 12. On other dates, depending on venue, YM will be sharing bills with Squarepusher, Hudson Mohawke, Caribou, Shabazz Palaces, Doldrums, Grimes, EMA, Forest Swords, Bear in Heaven, NGUZUNGUZU, the Flaming Lips, Ghostface Killer, and Purity Ring...which says something about the diversity of their sound (a little psychedelia, a little electronica, a little exotica, etc.).
