The posters advertising BEATS, a monthly night of adventurous electronic music held every second Friday at Vermillion Gallery & Bar consistently stand out among the glut of fliers papering our city’s flat and curved surfaces. They are done by an individual with the initials CM (I’ve emailed BEATS’ promoters to find out his/her identity and will let you know ASAP when I do).

CM’s design is not fancy: He/she simply draws straightforward portraits with incredible attention to detail and accuracy. His/her subjects are always stoically staring straight at you, imploring you to look into their serious eyes and try to discern why they’re so goddamn fascinating (spoiler alert: they make great music). These black & white, no-frills/all-skills posters rivet me without fail. That’s an accomplishment in a metropolis overrun with the visual stimuli of hundreds of show posters every day.

Tonight's BEATS features LA's Kone and Atlanta's HeRobust. Read about them in this week's Data Breaker.
