Queerview Mirror: Free CeCe

While we're on the subject of freedom—or at least people will be celebrating the concept of it tomorrow July 4th—let me share a little bit about CeCe McDonald. I just learned about CeCe at Gay Pride two weeks ago, through photographer Adrien Leavitt.

Chrishaun “CeCe” McDonald, a transgender woman of color, will be tried for the alleged murder of her attacker. Last June, Ms. McDonald was the victim of an attack in which, in the course of defending herself, one of her attackers was killed. Though witnesses reported criminal conduct on the part of several individuals, only Ms. McDonald was arrested...

From the article: But as the jury was being selected for the trial on May 2, McDonald accepted a plea offer of second-degree manslaughter, which is likely to result in a 41-month prison sentence. In accepting the plea, McDonald had to give up her claim that she'd killed Schmitz in self-defense or by accident and had to forego a jury trial.
