I Have Never Been to Capitol Hill Block Party

Posted by on Fri, Jul 20, 2012 at 10:41 AM

Nor have I really been to any music festivals or things of this nature. But now I am going to this largeish outdoor musical party all weekend long, and I want to know: How does one go to these things? What are the hot tips? I am totally bringing a chaperone. What else do I bring? What are you wearing? How does this work? I am genuinely curious.

Just go in and wander around and be young, it takes care of itself. Promise.

@ That is the best music festival advice I've ever heard.

1. music tip: local band wishbeard on sat. playing with glitterbang at wildrose. they are so good!
2. i will be wearing mismatched socks, colorful feathers, and cheeseburger stickers.
3. gus is right. just let things happen to you and don't worry to much about getting to this band or that band at a certain time if its to much work. the best moments are stumbling on a band you never heard of and making a new drinking buddy you just met randomly.
4. ditch your chaperone.
5. only eat tacos. eat as many tacos as you can. they are easily accessible and DELISH!
6. bring a backpack for all your things. it will be easier to wear in a crowd then any purse you have. pack in it: an extra shirt in case you get wet, sweaty, someone spills beer on you. AND YES: SOMEONE WILL SPILL BEER ON YOU.

If it get's hot make sure you drink water. If you think you are going to need to pee in the next 1/2 hour chances are you should find a bathroom then. Don't let the lines get you down, use them as an opportunity to talk to your neighbors. Don't think you are going to see everything you want to see, chances are you'll see about 40% of them. Make sure you check out bands you've never heard of, the bands that surprise you are the best ones.

The best thing to do would be to walk around with me at the end of night, looking for Drunk(s) of the Week

I wanted to jokingly turn this into a sensational admission ala NPR intern who doesn't buy music but the joke just isn't coming to me.

real suggestions: get a 21+ wristband early cause the lines become a big hassle later in the day, show up to any neumos sets you wanna see before they start playing because the place gets packed pretty easily, there is more room near the front of the mainstage but you have to get past the bottleneck the 21+ area creates, Don't go into the Cha Cha Lounge basement sober, Make sure to go into the Cha Cha Lounge basement at some point

I'll give you one!

ALSO: if you have an iPhone download the free block party app. you can go through the schedule and hit the + button for each band you want to see and then it makes you your own personalized itinerary on the main screen of the app. pretty rad.
