KMCQ: What Happened?

Posted by on Wed, Aug 15, 2012 at 11:40 AM

There's an overwhelming feeling of betrayal in the Emerald City, as the once mighty KMCQ 104.5 ("In the shadow of Mount Rainier" / "Music I enjoy") has switched formats from classic oldies to the lunkhead favorites from nearly the same era. It seems that the Sonics and Wailers have been traded for Eddie Money and Huey Lewis & the News. The KMCQ Facebox page is filled with comments of dismay.

KMCQ.JPG

As an oldies station, KMCQ was nearly flawless. The only commercials seemed to be for the station itself, imploring you to preset the station on your radio. They played the best songs from the 60s and 70s, but sometimes played "Kids in America" or other cuts from the 1980s. It felt like we'd be friends forever. Now it feels like I'm 12 and I have to share a room with an older brother who won't stop playing his shitty records over and over again. I polled some people, you can read their comments below. What about you? Are you mad as hell and not going to take it anymore?

Mike Nipper: I play records, NOT THE RADIO. Gah.

Ben London: It's such a bummer. I loved the AM Radio haze that was KMCQ. I imagined some rich farmer up in Covington was tired of all the bullshit music on the radio and bought it so he could listen to the old radio on his tractor. Now the format is so narrow it seems like the only song they play now is "Hotel California".

Dre Gordon: Dear Q, or whatever you're now calling yourself,
My ears are NOT garbage cans and no, we are NOT "goin' ridin' on the freeway!" THANK FUCKING GOD FOR KIXI.

Dan Paulus: They pulled a Seger. A sweaty, greasy Seger.

Eli Anderson: It's 2012 and I'm supposed to care about the radio?

Greg Franklin: For a while there, it was the best radio station in the universe. It was a ray of morning sunshine as I grumbled my way across the 520 bridge, and a steadfast friend in the early afternoons when KEXP became a terrible techno party. I implore you to find someone else who will randomly drop C.W. McCall's "Convoy" into an FM playlist in 2012. I am a wreck.

Austin Hall: Finally, no more nostalgia!

Kerri Harrop: I am LIVID.

Matt Clark: Unfortunate. For over a year I was pleasantly surprised by their exceptional and refreshing selections. Now I just listen to KBCS and KUOW again. Fuck 'em.

Kyle Johnson: I'm fuckin' outraged...I miss the shadow of Mt. Rainier.

Kenn Job: The change lead me to discover that there's funk programming on KBCS from 7-9pm on Fridays. I need more funk and the KMCQ may be denying it to me in the way I wanted it before. Padding it with those weird in-between commercial/non-commercial commercials. It's weird.

Keith Whiteman: Radio, like children, doesn't HAVE to be given up on when they get old and obnoxious.

Joan Hiller: I don't even LIVE in Seattle anymore, and I just threw my radio down the toilet.

Eli Anderson: It was great while it lasted but I honestly can't be too mad at them for abandoning the money-sucking business plan of being an esoteric radio station that plays obscuro-classics with no commercials ever.

Steve Wampus Reynolds: I think it's a credit to the vision of the business and civic leaders of the city of Seattle.

Reilly Lambert: Reminds me of Lorain, Ohio. I hate Lorain, Ohio.

Jordan T Adams: I feel bad for the mother of whoever made the decision to change their program. Her kid is THE WORST.

Mutty Nice: Was a magical, beautiful, perfect shining star and then they hired some marketer, bought some shitty jingles and now it sounds like every other turd.

Mike Nipper: Also my bike doesn't have a radio.

Adam Lawrence: I loved the format previously. It was an oldies station that actually played oldies. I loved the esoterica of some of their choices. I won't listen anymore, but I don't begrudge the originators or feel they sold out. If they got to make some money based off of two(+) years of nifty radio programming, mazel tov.

Abigail Jane Vehorn: I was so so so upset. Although, the new programming is still better than the other "oldies" stations. It's very similar to what 97.3 KPSG used to be. That said, I've heard Hotel California 5 times in one day. BUT! The good news is the only commercial they play is the same one that KMCQ used to play which is Don Willis of The Ventures saying "I'm Don Willis of The Ventures, telling you to run, don't walk, to get your jewelry and gold appraised."

Kerri Harrop: They are playing Joe Walsh "Life's Been Good" right now. So, at least there's that.

Derek Erdman: That song does kind of rule.

Andrew Hall: I will never again tell all my friends that KMCQ plays all songs of the sixties and seventies. I was also pretty sure that the playlist looped after I heard "Mother and Child Reunion" go into an Elton John cover of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" around 12:15 AM two Tuesday mornings in a row. And is there anywhere left in the universe where "In The Year 2525" is still in heavy rotation now?

Shannon Perry: I got my KMCQ tattoo too soon?

You all must work at "I do not give a F job and the bussiness world should conform to you". I love the new changes. Keep smoking whatever you smoke and keep collecting those checks. I think whomever is doing this has made a difference to a dying signal. Hat's off to whomever!

If it wasn't number one don't play it. Yeah I noticed the sudden change and the repetition right away. I'm not mad or furious as some folks here but I am disappointed. I was in the business for 35 years and you know what? That's the way it goes. Formats are a never ending circle and they play like musical chairs. This week oldies, next week top forty, next week news/talk. Who are we today? Money spins the wheel like listeners spin the dial. As stated KCMQ was great for an expanded music list and much less repetition by playing many songs that may not have been number one but are just as familiar and comfortable to many listeners as the number one's. Before the change how often did you think "Cool, I haven't heard that in years, great tune" Well, it will likely be years before you will hear it again. Common sense vacated radio years ago and it plays a big part in why changes are so short lived today. Yup, sad. But not as sad as the awful jingle package.

I've seen Kerri livid . . . and that's some scary shit!! This alone should be a reason to abandon this farce and switch back to the format we all loved!! Don't want that Cherry Canoe comin' at'cha!!

If Queen Cities and Charles Dreifus invested the money that they're paying to Bumpstead and Jay Kelly to the former KMCQ team -- none of this would have been needed. Without any resources for promotion or sales support - KMCQ had 4 consecutive months with a 2.7 share -- eclipsing the ratings of the Mountain 103.7; Click 98.9 and matching the End 107.7 Who knows how high KMCQ's ratings would have been if Queen Cities had supported this station?
By choosing the path to compete directly with KJR, and, to a lesser extent with KZOK - 104.5 has entered into a losing battle - because they can't compete against the talent, resources and money of Clear Channel and CBS, respectively. A small player in a big market can be successful if there is product differentiation and a connection with the customer. KMCQ had this and it is now lost Advantage: Clear Channel and CBS!

When something is good it seems to disappear just as quickly. Case in point KMCQ. It WAS the coolest station in Seattle. To get your oldies fix, go online & check out KISN on line radio. They play about everything that was released between 1954 & 1976 & claim to have the worlds largest record library with over 94,000 titles. This is KMCQ COULD have become. A couple of people in the article mentioned listening to KBCS now. I have a show on KBCS called One Step Beyond which plays 60's & 70's soul & the music it has influenced & continues to influence. You'll hear known & unknown soul from the era as well as The Rascals, Stones, Small Faces, Sharon Jones, Allen Stone & more. Right now I'm having subs sit in for me while I recover from surgery. I'll be back in mid Sept. But listen anyway. The show airs Saturday nights from 8-10 PM & streams live on line.

Dammit, this sucks! I would often flip to 104.5 in the car and be wowed by whatever weirdness I found coming through the speakers (then try and remember some lyrics I could google to figure out what I'd been hearing). Fooey.

RIP "In the Shadow of Mount Rainier:.

The people who own radio are systematically killing it.

reminds me when they took 97.1 KISN fm (great oldies, all the time) off the air in Portland and replaced it with Lame-O Charlie FM, which claims to play "everything". There was outrage in the streets.

I will admit, "Heart and Soul" is pretty great.

"In 1984, Ray Parker Jr. was signed by the producers of Ghostbusters to develop the film's title song. Later that year, Huey Lewis and the News sued Parker, citing the similarities between the "Ghostbusters" song and their earlier hit "I Want a New Drug". According to Huey Lewis and the News, this was especially damaging to them since "Ghostbusters" was so popular, rising to number one on the charts for three weeks. Parker and Lewis later settled out of court. Huey Lewis has stated that his experiences with the producers of Ghostbusters may have been indirectly responsible for getting his band involved with the movie Back to the Future.

In the 2001 Behind the Music special, Huey Lewis stated: "The offensive part was not so much that Ray Parker Jr. had ripped this song off, it was kind of symbolic of an industry that wants something—they wanted our wave, and they wanted to buy it. ... [I]t's not for sale. ... In the end, I suppose they were right. I suppose it was for sale, because, basically, they bought it." As a result of this statement, Parker Jr. filed a suit against Lewis, claiming he violated the settlement's confidentiality agreement and seeking an unspecified amount of compensatory and punitive damages as well as attorney fees.

An issue of Premiere Magazine would later feature an anniversary article about the movie Ghostbusters. In that article, the filmmakers admit to using the song "I Want A New Drug" as temporary background music in many scenes. They then said that they had made an offer to Huey Lewis and the News to write the main theme, but they declined. The filmmakers then provided Ray Parker Jr film footage—with the Huey Lewis song in the background—to aid Parker in writing the theme song."

I'd like to talk about how Ray Parker Jr. is a jerk. And about how in a past life I was on the cover of the album "Sports". The bartender in the mirror, look it up.

I'd like to talk about how Huey Lewis always sounds like he's singing with an entire serving of lasagna lodged in his throat.

Derek, Huey Lewis is COOL. We can talk about it if you'd like.

So I spent a bunch of time looking at weird radio industry forums to figure out what the deal was with 104.5 and the reason for the format change.
The reason 104.5 didn't have any commercials and the magical playlist is the owners basically bought it to "flip it" by doing a bunch of radio industry things like changing the city of license and swapping frequencies. This all took several years and by the time it was ready to sell the economy was in the pits and terrestrial radio's future was growing increasingly bleak.
Now, the owners (First Broadcasting) haven't found a buyer but have instead brought in a new operator, some company out of Anchorage, perhaps to make it more appealing to potential buyers or to finally monetize their property.
I don't know anything about this stuff so by all means let me know if you work in the industry and I am misunderstanding the situation.
