A Line on My Mind

Posted by on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 4:10 PM

In the tune "What's Love Got to do With It," Tina Turner sings: "Who needs a heart/When a heart can be broken."

But this is very bad thinking. You can never imagine someone being at once sane and saying: Who needs a car, when a car can be broken. Or: Who needs a dog, when a dog can get run over. Or: Who needs a doll, when a doll can be torn to pieces. You get something not because of how it might crash, get killed, or be destroyed, but for how it works. Simply because it's only love that can break your heart, does not make love bad or the problem. Only driving a car can end you in a car crash.

Neil Young ("Only Love Can Break Your Heart") and Simon & Garfunkel ("I am a Rock") had the same flawed logic.
