For years I've owned the The Jerry Hahn Brotherhood album, The Jerry Hahn Brotherhood. No big. It came out in 1970 and went nowhere; I prolly paid a dollar for my copy. I thought I'd listened to the album attentively before filing it away into my archive, like, I remember the album being very much of its time. It was a bit all over the map, good, but not exactly mind-blowing. THEN last week, when I was trolling for 45s on eBay™, I found a DJ copy of the single "Captain Bobby Stout" on a seller's auction list. I remembered I had the album, but couldn't remember the track, so I took a punt and looked it up...
Uh...DAMN!! So heavy. So groovy. AND...I won the auction; it cost me a buck. Now, how did I overlook THIS fucking song when it's on the fucking ALBUM!? UGH. Well, I can't be the PERFECT record nerd ALL the time, can I?
A "proper" musician before forming the The Jerry Hahn Brotherhood, Hahn played/recorded with the John Handy Quintet, the Gary Burton Quartet, and did session work. He now lives in Kansas, his home state, and teaches jazz; read this interview for his story. Also of note, band member Mike Finnegan went on to do session work—a LOT of session work, plus recording with his own group as Finnegan & Wood.
Manfred Mann also have a version of "Captain Bobby Stout"; it's very heavy.
