Long Live 1997 (Or, My Trip To Orange County)

Posted by on Fri, Oct 5, 2012 at 11:22 AM

I was visiting some family in southern California for the last few days, and decided that it's really, really weird there. I was flipping through the OC Weekly and it features all the up-to-date information on the Long Beach Dub Allstars and No Doubt with articles on new waves of ska bands. Hanging out in Orange County is like being shot into a time capsule back to 1997! And I spent a few days listening to the famous radio station KROQ (station of choice for my 14 year old self) for old-times sake and was kind of blown away to hear that they've been playing all the same terrible music that I listened to in 8th grade!

Jimmy Eat World and Incubus are still apparently on high rotation! INCUBUS! For some reason, I thought they would stick to new top 40 of this generation. All this was kind of fun and amazing until my little brother told me that it's super hard to find like-minded friends to be in bands with, and that broke my heart. I went into older sister and turned to the internet to find an OC DIY scene and didn't find much—now I'm kind of curious... is there any kind of credible scene here? C'mon, they made a teen television drama about this place, there has to be at least ONE justifiable element of youth culture here, right? Some hidden beach pocket of a secret cool rock scene that I couldn't find on a 48 hour trip? Tell me!

During my brief time in OC (2007-08), it was a pretty dire environment for good rock. One had to go to Long Beach or LA to find something edgy. I'd wager the situation's not changed much.

Burger Records in Fullerton is very cool, had a great time playing to a largely high-school age audience there earlier this year.

I have no idea how close this is, but Burger Records and Innovative Leisure are two of the best DIY's in the world in my opinion, and they're both in that area. Recommend looking up those bands, going to those shows...

I totally forgot about Burger Records being in OC! Good call.
