Album / Love Listen to Former Lives, Benjamin Gibbard's New Solo Record

Former Lives will be released on Barsuk Records next Tuesday, but you can hear all of it today, via YouTube! Which is perfect timing for those of you going to Mr. Gibbard's Music for Marriage Equality benefit show at the Smith Tower tonight.

I find it interesting that a whole pile of bands did a Marriage Equality festival at the Funhouse on Sept 15th and there wasn't a single mention of it. I guess it doesn't count if participants aren't selling 100,000+ copies.

@1 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Team Dresch didn't sell 100,000+ copies of anything and we mentioned the shit out of that benefit. Sorry we can't write about every single show that happens. Of the 8 (give or take) bands playing that show at the Funhouse, I was only familiar with one, yours, the Bismarck. And FWIW I played ".079" on Locals Only the Sunday before the show and mentioned it. So at least there's that, right? But I suppose that's still not enough... I'm an awful, terrible person.

Megan- what I thought was interesting about the benefit we played (and us playing it was about the least interesting part, as far as I was concerned) was that it was exactly as you say- about 8 bands no one, including me, had ever really heard of. It was super eclectic, some good stuff, some not so good stuff, put together by a promoter who I think was pretty new to doing this sort of thing. That should be of interest to The Stranger, who makes its nut as the go-to outlet for new and exciting things happening in Seattle. If I wanted to read about established, middle-aged musicians releasing solo records I'd read Seattle Weekly or pitchfork.

Thanks for playing the track, and mentioning the show via the radio station. My issue was not with the radio station, but with The Stranger. Also- it is not the sole responsibility of Megan Seling to champion all things local...turns out there are a number of people who get paid real US American dollars over there.

also- I'll get you a copy of the new 7" this week- have some around the house I think...although a big wad of them are still in customs limbo in the UK.

Granted I'm not a 15 year old girl or some nerdy 20 year old guy, but I'm more than sick to death of Gibbard's voice. Can someone suggest to him a forthcoming decade of instrumental albums? He almost gets it at "Cowpoke".
